Looking at your graph, from the (consensus?) 15thc trough to late 20th c peak is over 1.0 C, which would exceed even the high end .8C drop. Which would indicate that yes, the end of the 20th century had the highest temps since 900 CE (and thats not reflecting what I understand is continued warming from 1999 to 2006)

Absolute numbers from times preceeding 15th century are contended (as well as the shape in the MBH case).
MBH flattened trough to peak to only .2 C via improper statistical treatments.
Other historical temperatures constructions are in question not for the shape of the signal as much the absolute value of the data, primarily for choice and weighting of some questionable proxy sources to begin with.
The point of this entire exercise is ability to test models backwards and forwards. If historical temperature proxies have significant confidence range issues than they can't realistically be tested, leaving only reconstructions via the very limited 1850 onward as the means to test climate models.

And then adding what seems to be an uncontroversial increase from the 15th C trough to 1999. I understand where you are going with this saying OK if you believe circa 1600 data simply add .8 C to it according to the other reconstruction data. Viola you got the high point for the MWP.
My point is that there is question about the validity of the other reconstruction data as well as they all incorporated proxies of questionable validity (at least according to the critics). In other words it is very likely these are flawed as well for the choice of proxies to include but not the statistical treatment of the data. Meaning the peak to trough difference is likely even greater than 0.8 C were the suspect proxies not used.
Point being although claimed as settled, no more discussion, full stop the arguement rages on.
What is acknowledged and agreed to by almost everyone is 1850 -2006. (although it is interesting even in the instrument period the loss of temperature recording stations)
