There has to be a connection between these two. I mean, I visited my home this weekend and it was like a bliss. Everything just so calm and nice. Even the youngsters were not causing a lot of ruckus, even though it was a weekend.
Then again, that place is pretty isolated from the city, so it's a nice neighbourhood by all standards. It wasn't very valuable when we moved there maybe 20 years ago. There weren't much houses around, and my dad built our house. All my friends from that block also had their fathers build their houses, in fact I think everyone in that neighbourhood built their house, so it was kind of a working class area. But not crappy houses, normal and nice houses. It's interesting to look back and see like it is now. There were only few roads, not even asphalt. And the rest of the area was just field. So everyone built their stuff, and now it looks like an upper middle class neighbourhood, and if you want to come in now, well first of all you can't, since there's no free land, but even if you move into a house someone sells, it means you are defienitly making big bucks, you have to have a lot of money to move in now, because the property values have gone up so high even I couldn't afford to get in there now.
But it wasn't like that when people slowly invaded the area. It's like one of them nice suburbs you see in movies now. So, the surroundings are nice, and I bet that affects the young people living there. There's no crime problem, I think it has like 0 percent crime rate or something. Everyone knows everyone, and everyone new is welcomed to join as well, so it's not a typical place in here.
It's common that you see kids outside playing in the middle of the night as well in summer. I might stumble drunk as hell, and some 10 year olds pass me. It's just that safe, I think I'm the biggest threat and I visit the place rarely so.. it's pretty safe.
One of those places where you never see cops. Because they just have nothing to do there. You don't see tags anywhere, no windows broken, nothing. So I started wondering, from the obvious reasons like people being pretty well off, but also the pressure of the local society there. I mean, if you want to be a punk, people just won't tolerate it. I don't recall a single event, where local punks would have ever destroyed any private property. They just smash like the school or something. It's such a huge thing to attack someones property there, because it's not common, so if you want to be a bad ass, it just won't be tolerated and you'll be alone.
THat's the image I would get from Japan, it just won't be tolerated, it's not only rude, but you'll truly be an outcast should you mess with people there. When you go to other areas, you'll start seeing some problems, but you also notice, that people don't care so much about it. People don't know each other at all, and they act as if it's not their problem. So there's no pressure to do the right thing.
What do you guys think? I think the pressure is a major factor in it, that it simply is not tolerated. Of course you can't do this afterwards, I mean if the neighbourhood is pretty messed up to begin with, well, there's not much you can do, except try to move out if possible. And if people know each other, I mean you just don't go mess around when your neighbours invite you to eat in their backyard and nice stuff like that. But one more important thing to notice, there IS a high tolerance at the same time, as in I've used to have parties in the backyard, pretty wild ones too. People all drunk, loud music, and no one complains. There are unwritten rules, as in you get to party, as long as it's not every weekend you make noise and interrupt everyone, but then your neighbours get to do it as well, and you should tolerate it as well.
It works. And I mean wild parties. I think all my neighbours there have seen me naked, drunk, rolling on the ground, doing my backspins while my genitalia is wiggling and rectum showing to everyone interested. So you can do what you want, as long as you keep the peace in the neighbourhood, follow the unwritten rules. And since everyone tries their best, it has become a nice area, and very valuable in terms of property price, and today it is almost exclusive neighbourhood, as in you can't move in unless someone sells, and rarely anyone would sell.
