Did it ever occur to you that maybe the planets are in the right orbit, it's only the axis of the sun that is tilted?

The same way the axis of the Earth is tilted.

The Earth was hit by something large enough to change its tilt

You want to be using the plane that the sum of angular momentums rotates around. Not the ecliptic, which is just the earth's plane of rotation.

The ecliptic is 7 degrees off the sun's equator, and all the other planets beside Mercury are also off the sun's equatorial plane. Maybe calculating this sum of angular momentums will give us an idea of the size of the intruder or how often it intrudes.

Btw, I was looking at near Earth comets and there is a big spike at 11-12 degrees of inclination. Back in '99 some astronomer reached the conclusion that long period comets are being influenced by a large planet in the Oort Cloud because they do exhibit a pattern.
