Rental agencies require a CREDIT card, not a debit card specifically, or else require a large deposit (at least in the US). They take a $200 'hold' on your credit card, or if you use debit it's $250-$300 and it's actually taken (and then given back of course if you return the car).
Further, at least in the US, CREDIT cards often include a loss damage protection (car insurance, for damage to the car itself) while debit cards do nothing of the sort.
So yes CREDIT cards at least in the US are pretty much required for renting a car cost efficiently (and some places won't take Debit).<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

I rarely carry around large amounts of cash on me anyway, so I will use a credit card so I get the cashback and then pay it off ASAP. I know that Dauphin does exactly the same thing...Speaking of Erith:

I don't love it but since I know banks make money by having more cash on deposit, I can understand it a littleYou don't get to 300 losses without being a pretty exceptional goaltender.-- Ben Kenobi speaking of Roberto Luongo

To the original topic
It sounds as if they are just trying to cull their customer list. I hate the sound of this type of charge but they are probably happy to peeve their non-profitable customers.
Personally I am perpetually in a credit balance on my CC. I use it constantly and pay it off on the 1st and 15th of every month (payday)-- They get no interest but they do make their money from the transaction fees the vendor paysYou don't get to 300 losses without being a pretty exceptional goaltender.-- Ben Kenobi speaking of Roberto Luongo
