The problem is where it effectively becomes like a cartel, ie, one does and the rest follow suit and restricting competition...

Rental agencies require a CREDIT card, not a debit card specifically, or else require a large deposit (at least in the US). They take a $200 'hold' on your credit card, or if you use debit it's $250-$300 and it's actually taken (and then given back of course if you return the car).

Further, at least in the US, CREDIT cards often include a loss damage protection (car insurance, for damage to the car itself) while debit cards do nothing of the sort.

So yes CREDIT cards at least in the US are pretty much required for renting a car cost efficiently (and some places won't take Debit).

Yeah, I can't remember how I did it when I rented the van, I think it was similar, although there was no difference between credit and debit cards...

On the other hand I use my debit card and am consistently asked if it is a credit card, because if it is they will refuse service

              (My 10,000th counted post )

I rarely carry around large amounts of cash on me anyway, so I will use a credit card so I get the cashback and then pay it off ASAP. I know that Dauphin does exactly the same thing...

I can see how that might be an alien behavior to you, but rest assured it's pretty commonplace.

As I said, when I have rented vans to move large amounts of stuff around...

Note: I don't get cash back off the bank, when buying things as a groupd I get people to give me the cash and I pay for them.

It´s IMHO not illegal. It´s business after all and customers still can change banks/credit card companies if they find companies that don´t charge any fees for unused credit cards.
Yeah right. We're talking about the ****ing banks. They will all start charging for it. Either that or there will be other banks that don't charge for it and they charge for something else. They have us by the balls.

They are charging a fee to those earning less than £1500 a month? That's nice, charge those with the least ability to pay the fee
errr-- its not for those that EARN less than 1500-- its those that HAVE less than 1500 in the account. My bank does this-- I avoid ALL service charges if I retain that balance

I don't love it but since I know banks make money by having more cash on deposit, I can understand it a little

                                To the original topic

It sounds as if they are just trying to cull their customer list. I hate the sound of this type of charge but they are probably happy to peeve their non-profitable customers.

Personally I am perpetually in a credit balance on my CC. I use it constantly and pay it off on the 1st and 15th of every month (payday)-- They get no interest but they do make their money from the transaction fees the vendor pays
