  • Canadians to get Leopard 2s?

    Still weaker than a M1A2

Interesting, I thought the CF was going to an all-wheel force?

Good, they're great tanks. But I don't know if they saw any action.

What does Canada need tanks for? They wouldn't last long in the extremely unlikely event of war with the US and I'm not sure Canada has the transport planes needed to quickly ship them anywhere else. Investment in the Air Force and Navy would seem to make more sense...

They plan to invade! What else could it be? Now that we're occupied elsewhere they see their chance. We all better start learning to speak Canadian, eh?

We're currently part of the SALIS program in NATO and are set to take delivery of C-17s in August, so transport shouldn't be that big of an issue. Having said that, I don't think we should be fielding a tank force either.

Yeah, we're getting new naval helicopters too. It's Christmas time for the Canadian military!

For things like fighting in Afghanistan?

And as pointed out, the current government has ideas about making the CFs a more robust force.

It should be discussed at the SC.

What role do Canadian tanks perform in Afghanistan that couldn't be performed by a cheaper, wheeled armored vehicle?

The canon, and the support it can lend to infantry in tough spots.

We rushed L2s to the theatre after the rough time we had in the fist phase of Medusa. The local commanders asked for abilities to provide support fire under their command, and for once they got what they wanted.

It seems the current Canadian govt is serious about winning, or at least losing as few Canucks as possible.

A 120mm tank gun seems like overkill for infantry support. A smaller gun on a smaller armored vehicle (or air support) would fill the role just as well. Air support can also help in places tanks can't; how much of Afghanistan has terrain that is conducive to the use of tanks?

Seems like a waste of money to me, and you guys don't have a ton to throw around like we do...
