The rationale behind discrediting Liberal Arts

take me for example, I always wanted to work with development economics and the like. im going to graduate with a degree in economics from a top 15 school in the world and I cannot find any paying jobs in the field, only unpaid internships. now im still going to send out resumes to NGOs, but ive started looking at jobs at banks, where during the 18 month training period, they pay you between $50 000 and $60 000 a year. So I have the choice of either going to graduate school for two more years while still being unable to work at these NGOs/ IOs (I mean most of them only offer unpaid internships to those enrolled in a MSc/MA/PhD program) or I could start working now for a bank (if they accept me.) I am pretty sick of studying, but I would have been willing to work for a year or two in development before getting a masters/ phd.

Science and engineering departments subsidise arts and humanities departments. Grants are "taxed" by the university at a certain rate, and the money is redistributed to poorer departments. In general, sciences and engineering get grants while arts and humanities receive the redistributed income.

I'd like to see some hard accounting numbers KH. I fear this may just be a perception and not fact. Furthermore, at private universities why should that matter?

Students pay large amounts of money to go to those universities and many of them can't take the sciences.

Relatively low cost of running the programs (the profs don't get paid too much 'cause they can't get jobs elsewhere), lots of stupid kids who want to throw money at the university to "get a degree" = money maker.

Please, why don't you tell me some more about how it's simply perception. I like hearing somebody who has no experience dealing with academic research budgets telling that to somebody who does.

I suppose the line I filled out telling the University how much of our money we're going to give them for the privilege of being allowed to buy a computer is simply perception and not fact.
