The Daily Mail is so known for having been pro-Hitler in the 30's that when the mayor of London calls a Jewish reporter who works for the Mail a "Nazi" some folks think its wrong for anyone to be offended.Originally posted by Lazarus and the Gimp
It's the most right-wing of the popular tabloids, with a habit of huge campaigns against minority groups. Some years back it was single mothers, now it's Muslims.
It was stridently pro-Hitler in the 1930's. Now it alternates bullying campaigns against minority groups with sob stories about kittens with sore paws. It's vile."A person cannot approach the divine by reaching beyond the human. To become human, is what this individual person, has been created for.” Martin Buber

Daily Mail = NY Post?
Other problems with the article have been cited, aneeshm, beyond just the newspaper in question being dodgy. I note that you ignored them. Of course.

Taking a quick glance at the Hindu Forum website, they seem kinda mainstream. Stuff about integrating, some lobbying about Kashmir. Nothing about Aryan invasion theory. Im not sure why I should assume theyre making stuff up out of whole cloth. I dont assume that when a Jewish community group I know to be mainstream reports something, and Im NOT SUPPOSED to assume that when say, CAIR says something."A person cannot approach the divine by reaching beyond the human. To become human, is what this individual person, has been created for.” Martin Buber

I think you missed my point Arrian. While the Daily Mail seems, from what I can gather, to be the most right wing daily paper in UK, and is perhaps not reliable, its getting a little odd judging evolving institutions by their position in the 1930s. The Daily Mails history exempts folks who call a Jewish reporter a Nazi, and then refuse to apologize, even while al-guardian gets to print bitterly anti-Israel pieces, and criticizing them is an attempt at censorship, dontcha know. A while ago here somebody decided that the murder of Pierre Gemayal was no biggie, cause he was head of the Phalange party, and when I questioned that, GePap appeared to cite the Phalange's fascist roots in the 30s - again, despite Phalange never having gone to war with Lebanons neighbors or established a totalitarian regime - and despite Gemayel being assasinated by a Jew-hating, authoritarian, aggressive regimes agents.Originally posted by Arrian

if you check the hindu forum website, the DM seems to have reported accurately both on what the HF said, and on the police response.Originally posted by Odin
@ Aneeshm for using The Daily Mail as a source.

No, I didn't miss your point. I ignored it. I was asking a broader question about the editorial bent of the DM. Militant right-wing tabloid? NY Post springs to my mind.I think you missed my point Arrian.
As for what the DM did in the 1930s, yeah, that's a tad long ago to be using as a standard now... though if the paper has been a RW rag the whole time, the shoe does seem to fit. It doesn't excuse calling somebody a nazi who isn't a nazi, but I can't speak to that incident... and that incident does not make the DM a reliable source somehow.
And again, there were a number of other reasons to question the story that go beyond the quality of the DM.

yeah, cause being rightwing in British politics since 1939 has been so close to being Nazi.Originally posted by Arrian

The shoe that I was referring to was not the Nazi comment, but rather the various Brit posters' general attitude towards the DM, LotM. Apologies if that wasn't clear.

Don't pick on Aneeshm. I'm not familiar with the Daily Mail, but it's plainly a bastion of responsible journalism. Just look at some of today's headlines:
-"Dawn of the GM Babies?"
-"Psychics 'hired to find Bin Laden'"
-"Is Nessie's English cousin lurking in the Lakes?"
-"MoD defends psychic powers study"
-"Second chlorine bomb stokes fear in Iraq"
That last one is about a bomb "thought to contain chlorine" by somebody in the U.S. military, which together with a conventional bomb attack on a chlorine truck is a sure indicator of a chemical weapons program. Yes, this newspaper is the real deal!

I think you'll find that the Hindu forum doesn't attempt to spin the story to make it look like it's Sir Ian Blair levelling the accusations. That's the Daily Mail's doing.
Perhaps that's viewed as an acceptable standard of journalism where you come from, but I'm a little more demanding. The genesis of the "evil Finn" concept- Evil, evil Finland
