I had a fine experience with mine. The local anesthetic was nothing more than a slight poke in the scrotum, similar to getting the anesthetic at the dentist. (No, my dentist doesn't poke me in the scrotum; you know what I mean.)
The three most annoying things were:- Having to sit onto a cold splotch of conducting jelly, which was necessary so the cauterizing gun had a good ground.
- The fact that the anesthetic made it feel like someone had a good firm (but not painful) grip on the testes.
- The dull ache in the testes for the next couple of days.
I highly recommend the procedure. It is so much more effective and more liberating than the other forms of birth control out there.
[Lawyer's note: the vasectomy is an effective form of birth control, but does nothing to combat the spread of sexually-transmitted diseases; it is best used in a monogamous relationship.]Comment

I remember a play (forget the name) I saw many years ago where a man (Pat Paulsen) got a vasectomy for his wife's birthday (or something - anyway, it was a surprise). After the snippage, he waddled back on stage and carefully eased himself down on the couch. He still hadn't told his wife at that point, so the dialogue was funny in that she didn't know, but he (and the audience) did. One line stood out:
