I like to use the lyrics of Hebrew songs to help me learn the language. Its a more fun way to learn. This is a song I like, but couldnt find translated lyrics to it, so I asked about them here. With Siros help Ive now learned several words I didnt know, and because Ive now recognized some words I did know, but didnt recognize in the context of the song, I can use the song to improve my listening ability and improve my comfort with the grammar. Whats not to like?

If you want to dedicate a couple of evenings a week to sitting in class. Id rather listen to a song, then post on Poly, and learn by bantering.

BTW, Sa'ar can mean storm or whirlwind, but also dread. Theres a class of IDF-Navy corvettes called the Sa'ar - which sense is that understood to refer to?

saar isn't dread, afaik.

saar in the military can mean something aking to an all out attack - as in "storm trooper" or "storm the building"

apparently there are some uses in Taanach, that suggest dread, but that sense may be archaic.

But of course its never that simple. Most of the online bible translations are Christian. All (including classics like King James Version) translate sa'ar in that verse as "be afraid". But well, what if this is a Christian thing, based on the septuagint? Well there arent many online Jewish translations, but I find one at Chabad.org, and also the 1917 JPS translation.

Well JPS says "be afraid" but Chabad says "storm" (And yeah, both fit). Now Ive got two dead tree bibles at home, one is essentially a reprint of the 1917 JPS translation, but the other includes a more recent translation (as well as the Hebrew text). The 1917 translation was done before the Buber-Rosenzweig bible (German, but has influenced subsequent English translations, esp Jewish ones)

Seeing the dispute on that verse, im not sure im going to try any more at this point.

BTW, I've found a place to get funkier Israeli music. Last night POTM and i found Isramusic.com, a French site with an internet radio station playing a mix of Israeli music (some oldies like Lu Yehi, but also Hebrew rap, a Hebrew Macarena, etc, etc)

I had fun with the French too. For an English speaker, its a bit of a challenge figuring out the French transliterations of Hebrew song titles. And getting Israeli news on the half hour in French was also fun.
