Believe it or not there is a large English community in Northern France exactly for that reason. Cheap housing yet not terribly far from home.

That is keeping the 1.2 million unnoccupied homes empty in the US.

          • Yeah, it is a real problem which I think needs to be addressed...

            • Well Dauphin, remember to keep us updated on the status of your purchasing of this property...you haven't said whether that offer was accepted yet.

Yeah, an extra few hundred thousand properties in London would make one hell of a difference to the market...

              • This is how you solve it-

Get the councils entering unoccupied properties in order to maintain them and prevent deterioration to neighbouring (occupied properties).

The councils then let out the properties (possibly via housing associations). No changes to the law are required for this- it's already covered under the principle of adverse possession.

After 12 years of unchallenged occupancy, the council legally becomes the owner of the property under adverse possession. Again, no changes to the law are required for this.

Meanwhile, if an owner challenges the occupancy within the 12-year timeframe, the owner will be required to make a reasonable compensation to the council for their work in restoring the property if they wish to re-occupy the property. Alternatively they can sell it to meet the costs, and a habitable property is back on the market.

                • It's not a bad plan. I have heard rumblings about this kind of thing coming from the GLA for years, but precious little has actually happened...

                  • I just want to know when they are going to use the land by London Bridge, with its delapitated buildings and the famous graffiti line "Big Daves Gusset".

                    • Yeah, it seems a shame to let that area go to waste...it seems like ideal territory to put something tall there

                          • Oops, I'm out by three months. Demolition starts at the end of quarter 3, not the beginning.

                            • Is it officially called 'The Shard' now...I thought it was called that in the same sense that the Swiss Re Tower wa scalled 'The Gherkin'.

                              • I am sure that has moved back, I thought that originally, the demolition work was supposed to start at the end of last year.

There's also the Bishopsgate Tower too, a similar height...
