I can only speak for Bolivia and Argentina, in argentina the working class is peronist, not commie-socialist, commie-socialists are predominantly wealthy kids who study philosophy and smoke pot, and are disliked because when they demonstrate they do a lot of vandalism, and it gets annoying when your shop is getting destroyed by a rich kid.

In bolivia the left is mainly poor native americans, but they are not students so not an example for this thread.

Right. I guess it's different, depends what country we're talking about.

In my experience most self-proclaimed radical leftists at my university are basically naive fools and digest whatever Leninist and/or Maoist stuff they pick up as absolute dogma. I've had several morons try to convince me that China was a democratic paradise. I get along better with the moderate (non-anarchist) libertarian socialist types.

Now I still stand by my original comment but I suspect that you or I did well because of innate ability that was able to get through the state education system (that and I got to a decent state school too). But I think the problem is that you forget about other people further down the social ladder and try and grab what you can. And I am completely as guilty of this as anyone, but I also try and keep it real too. Although despite this I feel that I have very little in common with the working class. God knows what happens as I claw my way further up the greasy pole.
my state school in london was awful, but the one i went to in somerset was pretty good. i wasn't really academic though (not a single 'a' at GCSE), was far more interested in football etc. of course i've got ability, but more importantly i've learnt how best to play the hand the good Lord dealt me.

you're right about looking after number one, but it's the only way to be. i hope other people do well and stuff, but i've got my own concerns, a life to lead, money to make, and if i don't take what i can, you can be damn sure someone else will. no one is going to worry about you, so why waste energy worrying about them, it sounds harsh, but you don't need me to tell you, that's the way it is.
