Well I'm going to ensure that I finish this project from beginning to end - I don't like changing without completing what I am doing, so I will definitely be looking at shifting jobs then!

PH, that's a sign, you should definitely do it you'll be kicking yourself over if you don't do it, and you know it!

Zoppepappa, So you should meet with PH.. He would be an asset, we know he's smart, he wants to do this thing, so what's not to love about it? You can act as the headhunter here and score. All I see is a win win here.

Hehe, I have every intention of doing it, it has just been a matter of manoevring myself into the right position to be able to do it...unfortunately I am getting an ambitious sh*t in my old age, I actually want a career and I have very few ties too. And the £ (or € or $) are too much to resist...

So now everything is mad. I was offered the opportunity, should I continue with doctorage studies, that I could be posted in China, doing research. Damn. But I was doing little rounds and it might be possible that I'd be able to go there for private company as well.

SO, recommendations, we got smart experienced people, I need your input. My dream? My dream is to graduate soon, which I'll be doing, but I want to go to China for a year or two. A year most likely though, two years or more is a big commitment, year will do fine. So, I'd love to do that, because I have studied the region in my minor (Asian studies), and I'll have some language studies at that point as well, so hopefully I can order a hooker in Chinese

So, needless to say, the private sectyor would pay better salary from that time. However, should I do doctorage thingie, I'd be still able to support myself during that time, and I'd be getting my PhD. I'm projecting 3 years max, absolute MAX. So.. but that's just another stepping stone. I want to be posted in China because I'm interested in the region, the culture, history and business. I'd like that post, but I'd like the experience more. I do feel, that China experience will come a stock, a rising stock in the future, if you have worked there for a while and handled it well, speak the language a little.

So after that, I'm hoping I'd have my PhD, my book about it, and then I want to make the jump to North America. US or Canada. At this point I'm hoping to do only really good stuff, from really high level consulting to possible partnership in interesting endeavors.

So, should I get my China experience from Uni, or private sector? Private sector offers bigger salary, Uni offers the same experience, but isntead of money, PhD. Which one is better for the long run, pros and cons, your thoughts? They're both pretty damn good options. But looks like I get to choose.

Take the degree. I think in the long run it would serve you best economically.

rah, yes, exactly what I want to know, the long shot opportunities, economically.

I'd get good money fast with private company, but.. degree, plus the same experience.. I think my value would might be more if I choose University. You guys know this better, since I'm making the jump to NA after that. So, what matters is, what my value is in there after that.

Also, I'd have good opportunities to score extra in China, I could do consulting for Finnish SMEs there, and they pay _excellent_ money for that. So... but you see, if I was to stay here, I might go for private sector, because the doctorage thing won't give me an edge, unless I want to stay with the Uni forever and be a professor or some crap like that. But I figure, that in the NA, this might actually be better for my value in the long term.

Yes you recognize the basic issues. You'll get the same experience so resume wise on that issue it's a wash.

A phd doesn't always guarentee things, but when your resume is in a stack of many, it can't hurt. And some companies have guidelines on starting pay that are based on education level. In general you will make more having the phd. (not always)

Very rarely will the phd hurt. If they think you're over qualified for a job, you probably shouldn't be taking it anyway.

OK.. thanks for the input. It's not a trivial matter, for example in here, you might be better off going with the private sector, as you'll be paid the same no matter what (too little).
