And why should she. English is the language of international business.

She should if she gives a **** about how she relates to her employees.

You know when management prattles on about "leadership" and "vision?" That lady is lacking both.

I think the problem is merging with a French company, but do you know what it is like to have to deal with French companies?

She maybe wants to have good relations with them, but she can't let the French take over the company.

Yes I do, I deal with them all the time. Everyday even.

That's not the point. The point is work ethic.

What does that have to do with my point, Kid?

It's pretty simple. If you are a manager and you want to get the best out of your staff, deliberately alienating them is a bad idea.

I'm not saying to alienate them. When there is a merger like this there is cultural conflict. The French do business very differently than Americans. There's a struggle for the way things are going to be done with a merger like this. I can see her reasoning behind not speaking French.

Perhaps she sees some upside in that (including the obvious personal upside of not having to learn a new language). I certainly see the downside.

So now its unethical to not speak a certain language. Please explain.

                      • Lacking in work ethic means you're lazy, Kid, not "unethical" in the sense that you're morally bad (unless, of course, you are puritanical about work in which case laziness is bad because idle hands do the work of the devil).

You have to understand that the French are going to want everything to be done their way, and the language thing is just a part of that. And again, English is already the established language of business.

Well, it's not lazy, it's just good business.

                              • I was merely trying to explain that you misunderstood the term as Spec used it. I know that you think her refusal to learn French (and public statement that she wouldn't learn French) is "good business."
