Those are weird commies indeed. They've declared the IT industry as an "essential service," thereby preventing strikes. Meanwhile, their party workers are the first to take the streets to shut down the city whenever there's talk of privatising any loss-making, capital-starved public sector company.

Im not sure what sovereignty has to do with it. Sovereign states can print money, but they have no particular ways to raise real capital that an Indian state doesnt have.

I didnt intend this to criticize the Communist Party of Bengal. While I dont know the details of the land acquisition, and I certainly hope the farmers are compensated, it looks to me like the CP here is doing the right thing. Clearly industrialization through trade and capitalism is the way most likely to achieve development and to help the poor, who are presumably the CP's main constituency.

Two cheers for commie led capitalism.

I agree. It really depends on how they are going about it though. After all, collectivization in the USSR was the right thing to do. The way they went about it was beyond ham handed, and was monstrous. The Great Leap Forward was the right thing to do, but it ended up killing tens of millions of people the way it was carried out.
