I was thinking particularly of maps that are laminated or have a lot of colour (dyes). Hence fumes that might explain Moby's behavior.

But that works too. I mean, maps of America are gonna be the biggest, baddest, rootin-tootin'ist maps around, and are coated in OIL! FACT!

Nah, I'm too cheap for laminated maps...
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

I love maps. Positively love them.

I have no particular issue with using a GPS or SatNav thingamagig, but I don't feel the need for them.

            Ditto

I know my way around my city well enough that I don't need a SatNav and anywhere apart from towards mountains here, the roads are pretty darn arrow-straight and pretty grid-like. As long as you know the direction you want to head, you'll get there without going too far out of your way.

SatNav could be useful in the mountains but realistically there are very few najor roads so its very tough to miss one and I like the map. If I was going backpacking or something I might like to have a GPS though. Whikle I can do fine with a map and compass its tough to beat those things for precision in an emergency

Satellite navigation is now inn some ways just a cool toy. Like a lot of toys it is not really that necessary but if you think you would enjoy such a toy . .. go for it

Yep, and when that happens no one will be willing to pay $2500 for a one trick pony satnav in their car when their $200 cellphone already does the same job for much less money.
