When I was a child, with no preconceived notions, I read those books, because I was taught them. Because I was Brahmin, I did not develop a sense of hatred for upper castes after reading them. Later, when I thought about what I had learnt, I realised that a sense of hatred is precisely what they will encourage everyone except the upper castes to develop. Now I'm looking for proof of this.

Isn't that how the scientific method functions?

Observation (reading for the first time, without bias)
Hypothesis (that they are biased against upper castes)
Experimentation to convert hypothesis into theory (me going looking for evidence confirming my views).

And by the way, I've gone and bought the books for standard six, seven, eight, and nine. Reports to follow (our college is off for the next few days, so I'll have plenty of free time).

I just dont understand how you think the upper castes can do no wrong and the lower castes always do. isnt this a sign of your deep seeded dislike of other castes?

        Err....no.

That's how partisan pseudoscience functions. Make up your mind first and then look for evidence later.

You're sure you had no preconceptions? Most of us do, even as school kids.

Later, when I thought about what I had learnt, I realised that a sense of hatred is precisely what they will encourage everyone except the upper castes to develop.
I'll be interested to see, when you post the stuff, whether it is the sort of thing that would make someone hate the system or the sort of thing that would make someone hate modern-day Brahmins (or, alternatively, stuff that shouldn't make any reasonable person hate at all). I mean, the system itself was pretty ****ed up.

I haven't been reading the thread. Opened the last page, and his post was at the top in my view.

The current issue of the Economist is dedicated to India and goes pretty deeply into India's economic and social problems and why economically India is going to continue to be less successful then China. One of the reasons is horrible education.

People in the west see hordes of Indian engineers and programers and think India has a great education system and it does for the top students but the majority get fairly poor educations. 50% of the females in India are illiterate vs around 4% in China. India's elite get great educations and there are ways that even the middle class can get into those elite schools but most Indians remain locked out. That needs to change.

Castes can do neither wrong nor right.

                    Individuals can.

Things which I oppose are being done by upper castes as much as anyone else. In fact, some of the most vitriolic hatred for India and Indian traditions and culture has come from Brahmins. The Communist party here, for instance, was founded mostly by Brahmins.

I admit it, I was biased - I was biased in favour of whatever was being taught. It is only when I examined it critically that I found what a load of bunk a lot of it was.

That's one of my main grouses, actually. They blame a specific group of people for what was essentially a fault of the system.

For creating and perpetuating the system, most likely, but I'll wait and see.

                              You must be stupid.

You formed an opinion based on reading something. Now you look for stuff which confirms your opinions and copy-paste it.

                              THAT'S NOT THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD.

The scientific method would be: forming an opinion based on reading something. Coming up with possible things which would contradict your opinion. Coming up with possible things which would confirm your opinion. Looking at all of this. Changing your original opinion to fit the new data. Repeating until exhaustion. Publishing your final hypothesis with all evidence for and against. Pointing out possible future data which would expose weakness in the final hypothesis. Pointing out further refinements which might be made.
