With 1000 people dying a week now in Iraq's on going civil war almost entirely due to sectarian violence it is hard to see how 20k more soldiers can stop it. It is literally a drop in the bucket which will be swamped in a massive tidal wave of sectarian violence.

      I've been thinking about this.

For the government to be accepted by the Iraqi people, it needs to be able to provide: (1) security; (2) national reconciliation; and (3) basic services.

The various militias, death squads, insurgencies -- by striking out with mindless, random acts of mass murder -- keep the government from achieving any of the three.

If this continues, the government must fall. Then these groups each hope to pick up the pieces. --But oh what revenge awaits them. If they'd have blown up my wife, my kids, my brothers and sisters, I'd never let these murdering scum take charge as long as I was alive.

France was able to end its Reign of Terror by bringing in Napolean as dictator because he was a war hero who'd been away from all the slaughter. But what possible future dictator do the Iraqis have?? Iraq will become the land of purpetual slaughter.

Preferably with a projectile or a sharp instrument.
