Well, VC, it's 9F here (-13C), 12:45am, only a couple hundred miles south of you. That ice cream should be pretty well solid.

D: Yes, and they can have it as far as I'm concerned. I remember those winters you recall, growing up in central Vermont. Man, that was painful.
I am on a mission to see how much coffee it takes to actually achieve time travel.

                Odin is in Fargo.

You know, that warm, sunny place south of here, where Winnipegers go escape their cold winters.

As I write the temperature is -38.5c with a wind chill of -49c.

                      What a wonderful movie!

"So that was Mrs. Lundegaard on the floor in there. And I guess that was your accomplice in the wood chipper. And those three people in Brainerd. And for what? For a little bit of money. There's more to life than a little money, you know. Don't you know that? And here ya are, and it's a beautiful day. Well, I just don't understand it."

Big lake effect event just north of Syracuse NY. Two feet of snow already, and much more expected! Oh yeah, and the temp is around -15C, not counting wind chill.

Heavy lake effect squalls coming off Lake Ontario were up near Watertown much of Sunday with accumulations of 1 to 2 feet reported. As of 9 PM Sunday the squalls had made it into northern Oswego County and will hit areas east of the lake hard tonight. Snowfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour will be common with whiteout conditions. Over Oswego, southern Lewis and northern Oneida Counties we are expecting 1 to 2 feet of new snow tonight with some isolated higher totals over the Tug Hill.

Am I correct in this description of "lake effect" snow:

Cold dry air comes whipping out of Canada. It runs into less cold, moist air above the Great Lakes and -- presto -- turns to moisture into snow.

These are complete white-out conditions in the effected areas. Interstate 81 is closed, as is Amtrak service. No unnecessary travel. And yet just a few miles away we have clear (albeit very cold) skies.
