Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

No one stopped NK, Israel, India, Pakistan, Soth Africa, China, France, the UK, or the USSR (not putting the US because they were first and working on it secretly).
Any state that feels they national interests demand they have a nuke will get them unless it is physically destroyed or conquered. The question is how to change that calculation of national interests. Threats of destruction or impoverishment have usually not worked, since they only intensify the logic for getting nukes.

I can understand wrt threats of destruction, but how would threats of impoverishment do that?
And is there any record of serious economic sanctions on would be proliferators? I mean the sanctions on Pakistan and India were pretty limited.
Come to think of it, ISTM pressure on Libya DID work to get them to drop their program.
I can understand however, that the govt of Iran wouldnt WANT us to think that economic sanctions would work.

economic sanctions may have worked for both south africa and Iraq in addition to the libyan case you mentioned.
We tried bribes for north korea but those resulted only in an ignored agreement.

In RSA the sanctions led to regime change, and the new regime decided it didnt need nukes. Id rather not get into the complex question of whether a new regime in Iran would still want nukes - certainly the strategic change, though real, wouldnt be nearly as great as RSA, which went from being surrounded by hostile states, to fairly good relations with its neighbors.

He has nothing to lose. If his ME strategy is correct, attacking Iran is obviously the right thing to do. In this case, not attacking Iran would be a grave mistake and he will be forever seen as the president who knew what should be done but didn't do it.
If his ME strategy is incorrect, not attacking Iran won't change a thing. He'll still be hated and ridiculed a century from now.
Besides, he won't have to clean up the mess anyway. The next president could be blamed for not finishing stuff correctly.
So, and I'm willing to bet all my post count on it ( ), by late 2007 Iran will no longer have a nuclear program and we will all be thanking the US.

Good, Eli, I'm betting my postcount Dubyah won't do that. Accepted?

After a failed attempt to directly neutralize The Bomb, Bond is captured. After being told by Dr. Evil Ahmadinejad of the thoroughly nefarious schemes that Iran has in mind, he is locked in a cell.
Insert:
Bond looks around. No way out of this cell. The cell door creaks opens. In comes Ihrania Guuchimahma, the Iranian Head of Interrogations. She is dressed in skin-tight black leather (which shows off her fantastic figure) and is flanked by two hulking guards.
Ihrania: "Now, Mr. Bond, you must talk or I must inflicted upon you great pain."
Bond punches out the two guards and grabs Ihrania.
Bond: "Now, Ms. Guuchimahma, you must keep silent while I inflicted upon you great pleasure."
They topple towards the cell bunk while the camera fades out.
Fade in:
Bond creeps off the bunk, slips his clothing back on, takes the cell keys from the pile of Ihrania's clothing and exits the cell, locking it behind him as he goes.
Ihrania [stirring]: James? James?? [looks arouind at the empty cell] On no. Not again!
