if we're going to start weighting things by different languages are, and how hard to learn, than doesnt someone who knows, say, English and Hebrew, two totally unrelated languages, demonstrate higher intell than someone who knows French, English (about half the vocab from French, and relatively similar grammar) and Latin (from which French originates)?

Anyway, even discounting the Ladino, fluent in three languages aint bad.

"This said, despite the limitations to a proper definition of intelligence I have pointed out, I do rest my case that specific intellectual abilities do relate to intelligence, if only in a nominalist way (as opposed to a positivist approach), and that mastering one or several second languages count amongst them."

is this a round about way of making the point that ghetto kids who dont have need to do certain things that suburban kids do, will not do them so well, and this doesnt reflect any broader "intelligence" If so, I agree, though this seems an odd way of making the point.

Ability to master can only be tested if an attempt to master is made. Finns all seem to manage being trilingual, IIUC. There descendants on Michigan are mainly monolingual in English. A catastrophic decline in intelligence? Not likely.

I see no evidence that the ability to master multiple languages, given early enough exposure, is not universal. If it is universal, than failure to do so only indicates lack of exposure, and has no correlation with intelligence.

I am in regular contact with the hassidic world in NY. AFAICT all the females, and every male who goes into business rather than immersing himself in continuing torah study, manages to be bilingual in English and Yiddish, and manages at lkeast some reading knowledge of Hebrew. This includes individuals with some range of intelligence.

My very strong a priori is that you are incorrect. It would take very strong statistical evidence to convince me otherwise.

You teach kids not to begin a sentence with a relative pronoun not because it's wrong, but because they can't make the difference between a stand alone relative used as a demonstrative pronoun and one that begins a relative proposition.

Yup. American as primary and english as secondary.

You can justify any violation of the rules of grammar because, in the end, all that matters is successfully communicating whatever it is you wish to say.

That said, contravening standard usages of English - which increases the possibility of miscommunication - only makes sense if you think your unorthodox method does a better job of getting your point across than traditional grammar would.

Depends on the circumstances. I'm fluent in three languages, but I learned them all as a kid. Learning two additional languages as an adult is much more impressive.

Hereby I declare your average American/English/Canadian poster stupider than the euros, on a statistical basis.
There's a problem with your analysis! I'm American! With my freakishly massive intellect I disturb the average so Americans are highly favored!

                      Yeah, true

I guess a turk who knows turk, english and arabic would be a genius for fake boris, since that individual would speak 3 languages belonging to three unrelated language families...

Hindi, assamese and english are related, the three are indo-european

So you only speak indo european and dravidian languages, while that hypothetical turk would speak an afro-asiatic (semitic) language, an indo-european language, and a turkic language...

So he would be smarter than you!
