The problem with asking this is the fact that the victors write the history books and the Mongols didn't like to write... and considering how often Temujin was victorious that makes for a difficult situation.

        Robert E lee,

        he lost
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

Imagine how badly the Confederates might have lost without Lee...

All the German WWII generals lost, Napoleon lost, Hannibal etc. Are they now crap because they ended up on the losing side...?

Confederates would have lost reeeeealy bad if not for Lee. His defensive genius saved Richmond twice. Once from McClellan during the Peninsula Campaign and once by waging a series of battles against grant, including the Battle of the Wilderness (or Spotsylvania Courthouse), to thwart Grants Overland campaign.

It is strange, though, how some of the best Generals fight for the losing side...

Roberrt e lee was a competent general who has been completely over romantacized. He is only ever mentioned because he was american.

I will agree that he is over romanticized, as much about the American Civil War often is. However, he was more than a "competent" General. He had a tactical mind which could be seen as far back as the Mexican-American War.

What I know of him is that he seemed very capable as a battlefield general. Most of the time he was up against vastly superior forces and still held his own for the most part.

                  Certainly better than Stalin...

That is true...I would rank Hitler before I would rank Stalin...and I wouldn't rank Hitler at all.
