    True.

Though, personally, I would be more willing to disclose my salary to a complete stranger than to a friend.

Why? If you have a really good friend, wouldn't it follow that you'd trust him/her with just about anything?

It's not really a trust issue, and I don't mean my really good friends anyway. But I think things like income/net worth/etc. should be meaningless when it comes to my social relationships. Besides, I probably make quite a bit more than pretty much all my friends, but I don't want any of them to see me differently because of it.

None of my good friends are lawyers so its irrelevant to their job situations. Actually none of them have ever asked.

Also with a salary such as you disclosed, I would fear that others would see such ready, even eagar, disclosure as a form of bragging.

If someone asks, I would assess whether or not to tell but so far I only tell certain people and it is usually in a situation where the disclosure is mutual and we are in similar positions so the information is relevant

              I have been in management

and lack of salary knowledge was used to great advantage by the company to lowball workers. This was especially true, when the economy was not doing so well, even though the company was doing very well. As for being eager, I would say that this board really doesn't count since only 2 people who still post here have ever met me.

                pchang gets paid too much

I have no idea what he gets paid, but if he can live on poopootino and afford it... it's too much

I get paid well for where I live, now. I have never heard that talking about salary is punishable... that's weird.

Never heard of it. However, as soon as you earn a fair bit of money, it's the whole society that has a taboo about the exact income.

Many people earn minimal wage or barely more, and have no problem talking about it.

live in Cupertino and you figure anyone who has been living here for more than a year must be able to afford it. Thus, I figure me and my 40,000 closest neighbors must all be overpaid.

pchang I wasn't talking about your disclosure here. I was more talking about how it COULD come across if you are too eagar to share with your real-life acquaintances.

OH and I agree on the lowball approach of management -- but thats why I keep current. The law firm's associates circulate a salary scale for 1-8 years of experience with numbers for all the major firms and the placement agencies provide information as well. That plus my few colleagues gives me the info I need.

Exactly... I lived there for 4 years, and the only way I made a living was by stealing hubcaps from the Apple parking lot.

Actually, we are much less unionized than most industrial countries. IIRC, even the US is more unionised than us.
