Silk was developed in China at least 5,000 years ago and has been an export product for at least 3,000 years. Legend has it that Xi Ling-Shi -- a Chinese empress 5,800 years ago -- discovered the silkworm while on a walk investigating damage to the emperor's mulberry trees.

The silk road, a thoroughfare intertwined with the history of humanity, is named for the trade of the product.
