  • I think the information age will control us

We would equal information age to freedom. TO some extent, I must agree. In it's purest form, it would be the greatest tool, and it still funtions to some degree.

But why are we eager to give up our rights, we can't wait to just have them taken away in the name of what ever, security, greater good and whatnot.

The change is quite outstanding. People used to die for these things, they used to fight wars for these things. Now, we are imploding within. So why is this change happening, why are we giving away our rights? Most of all, protection. Why? Like I said, people have died in masses, why do we need protection like this? We need to be protected of being free?

It's the information age. Information travels quickly, we are bombarded by news, 24/7, accidents, attacks, angry people, all kidns of threats. Before information age, we didn't hear about these things so often, but now they have invaded our own homes and living rooms. So, in a way, we are more afraid than ever, even though we are more safe than ever. It makes no sense.

Furthermore, are we protecting our freedom, or are we protecting something else? I thought it was the freedoms, that were worth protecting and fighting for. Unless there's an all out war, in all continents, a real world war, I don't see why any of our rights should be limited. I'm not afraid. Just because someone else is, doesn't mean MY rights should be limited. Let them be afraid and believe all the hype. Watch more TV. Explosion, shooting, killings.

Exactly how does taking away some rights and adding surveillance help? It doesn't. It just gives an illusion of safety. A high price for freedom. Some say it's worth the illusion even, but those people are the ones who are sheep and should never represent free countries anyway.

It was clearly written. All of you can say, well, you have such a bad grammar, but I'm seriously starting to think that it's not the only problem. The problem is also, that if anyone has trouble understanding this OP, they are simply ****ing stupid.

                    Pekka is right!

I too have noticed the inherent conflict between the right to privacy and the invasive nature of the Information Age.

Was it Justice Brandeis or Justice Holmes who observed that the greatest of all our freedoms in the freedom to be left alone. But today, scanners, surveillance, computer searches, metal detectors, data file sharing, data gathering, consumer profiling, security cameras, all probe at us constantly.

It will change many things. Currently, it is giving us little people access to information on what the big shots are doing, that gives us a check on their power.

realpolitic, unless you've been sleeping for the last 10 years, information age is here and now, and has been for some time .

The only way the little people have gained more is the way they can communicate, blogs, challenging media that is betraying every nation in their respective locations, mostly by choosing what not to report. These days, MOST of the news are, in fact, copies of news from the others, that's why the source seems to be more than not, another news station. IN the fight for audience, they all have to do the same ****ing news, it's really boring. It's not what they actually cover, it's waht they don't want the competitor to cover and yourself missing it.. so they'll just copy it. So they all copy from each other, and it's just a circle jerk from there on, effective right now, and it's only time when the news cohesion will be higher, while the actual events reporter will go down. Too much work, why bother? It's not like they're doing anything original now..

So. What happens is, that the audiences knows only that same crap, with the internet, blogs will be pretty decent way of challenging the traitors that is the current media.

HOWEVER, it still doesn't change the fact, that the one with most capacity will be able to control the current issues, by forcing talking heads, blogs, etc. in numbers, so they will be setting the paradigms, and the rest just have to follow it. Interesting little stories will be neglected, because they're not interesting.. what is interesting is a heated battle between few talking heads, blog wars, **** it, let's not even discuss the events, let's just fight each other!

And while the masses gather into it, the fact has been established, that the one with most capacity will control the topics EVEN MORE than they used to. Sure, a man has a fighting chance. It's not free anymore though, surveillance is everywhere, and if you cross the lines, you will be in for some hard time. Your character will be assassinated, if we have 100 blogs, 10 digital magazines, 1000 youtubers, and you got yourself and your own little website, and you cross us, what do you think will happen t you, EVEN if the facts are on your side? You will be ****ing destroyed and forgotten with your little facts.

So even though we are supposed to be able to communicate more and better, the one with the capacity and resources will strengthen their position even more so, by being able to control that actual 'free topics', and we are to believe they can't do anything, so it's an illusion and false sense of trust.

                          It's social control.

The problem isn't realy the tecnology itself but the "Dis-Info-tainment" that the masses are spoon fed to make them afraid and to brainwash them into devaluing their rights. The same lies could be told by any medium of communication from the the Word of mouth Gossip, to Pravda to Fox News.
Companions the creator seeks, not corpses, not herds and believers. Fellow creators, the creator seeks - those who write new values on new tablets. Companions the creator seeks, and fellow harvesters; for everything about him is ripe for the harvest. - Thus spoke Zarathustra, Fredrick Nietzsche

Right, right, the technology is not the problem, I agree. It rarely is. It's merely a tool.

Plus, the tool has great potential. Like said, it enables faster communication and disables distance barriers and restrictions of physical location. So.. it can go either way, so far both elements are co-existing.
