Blast hits U.S. Embassy compound in Athens

ATHENS, Greece (CNN) -- An explosion shook the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Greece, early Friday morning, causing no injuries, police said.

A rocket-propelled grenade launched from across the street in busy downtown Athens could have been the cause, Greek counterterrorism authorities told CNN.

Counterterrorism and embassy security officials immediately began inspecting the area and nearby buildings.

The only damage captured by television cameras after the attack was a window blown out on an upper floor. Embassy staff members said they saw scattered glass on the floor.

The explosion occurred close to the ambassador's office, but police said the ambassador was in a safe location.

Police cordoned off streets around the embassy after the blast, causing a near-standstill of traffic during morning rush hour.

The embassy in Athens was the target of a rocket-propelled grenade attack on February 15, 1996. That attack caused minor damage.

Reportedly, a toilet was also damaged.

RPG, we don't know what make, from an alley at the opposite side of the avenue. They found a spot where a basement window is broken, supposedly from the backfiring gases. The rocket hit the private WC of the ambassador's office.

The opposition accuses the government that they have effectively incapacitated the police antiterrorist dept through internal party politics and favouritism.

This 17N sort of hits were thought to be a thing of the past, after the disbanding of both 17N (November 17) and ELA. Nowadays, most political violence that occurs is against property (banks, ATMs, politician's bureaus) and the police, in the form of small camping gas IED's and molotov cocktails, perpetrated by a plethora of groups, claiming to be anarchists.

Rocket fired at US embassy in Athens

A Greek extremist group claimed it carried out a rocket attack on the US embassy in Athens on Friday, which shattered windows in the building but caused no injuries.

Anti-terrorist police said the rocket was fired at around 6 a.m. from across a broad boulevard outside the main entrance. The embassy building is surrounded by a steel fence and surveillance cameras.

Charles Ries, the US ambassador, called it “a very serious attack.”

“It was perhaps a rocket-propelled grenade,” he told CNN. “The damage was minimal. It was fortunate it took place when there were very few people in the embassy.”

Revolutionary Struggle, a leftwing group that has previously claimed bomb attacks against international businesses and Greek government offices, took responsibility in a call to a private Greek security company, according to Greek officials.

It was the first attack against US officials in Athens since a rocket was fired at the embassy building in 1996,without causing any injuries.

Five US officials were among more than 20 foreign diplomats and Greek businessmen killed by November 17, a local leftwing terrorist group, during a 25-year period of activity.

Members of the group who were arrested in 2002 after a failed bomb attack are serving long prison sentences. According to Greek police, bomb attacks against cars and businesses have declined significantly since November 17 was dismantled, although several of its members are believed to have escaped arrest.

Basically, it was a bunch of leftover nobodies from 17N that attacked and seriously injured a window, some wall paint, and a crapper.
