Did you know that before invasions, Indian women went around effectively topless most of the times, or wore garments which did not have the explicit purpose of covering the breasts (only of supporting them)?

    Ah, those were the days.......

I've heard European dress was much the same for a period as they were getting their Empire on in your country. It was later in the Victorian/Edwardian era that they got all prudish.
Companions the creator seeks, not corpses, not herds and believers. Fellow creators, the creator seeks - those who write new values on new tablets. Companions the creator seeks, and fellow harvesters; for everything about him is ripe for the harvest. - Thus spoke Zarathustra, Fredrick Nietzsche

I knew that this was the result of imperialist invaders. If only the West and muslims had left India alone, it would be the most perfect country to ever exist (provided, of course, there was no other outside influences as well, because they seem awfully impressionable).

Prudishness was a result of British values, actually. This is an accepted fact, not something I made up.

As for what India would be if it were not for invasions - we don't know, and there is no possible way we could know. One thing is guaranteed, however - we'd be far better off than we are now. Maybe we'd have been like Japan.

Brutal aggressors until someone put them in their place?

That is OBVIOUSLY not what I meant. When I say like Japan, I mean that we would have been quite insular, and would have adapted Western technology and social ideas, but only on OUR terms. In fact, we could have been said to be the opposite when it comes to aggression - we'd probably have been the peacekeeper in the subcontinent.

And if you think Japan had been "put in its place", you are mistaken. Japan is a fundamentally very militarist society, and within some time they will re-militarise.

Really, because before the British arrived it was quite mess, which is why they were able to take over so easily. We can't entirely predict what would happen, as you said, but it could be that the British may have actually saved India.

You misunderstand me. I'm talking about the hypothetical case of what would have happened if the Muslim invasion never happened.

Crap trolling, and you keep going all thread.

Any student of the Tantra will have read that British Victorian prudism played a part in 'covering up' Indian women.

Aneesh, pardon my ignorance, but to what extent, in terms of time frames and geography, did the Muslim influence 'conservativise' dress codes, compared with the British influence?

Most Brits are ok, but some are so uptight their anal orifice puckers.

I wouldn't know, but it did play quite a part, because the Muslim ideal was a completely covered woman. There was also the fear that a Muslim aristocrat might simply "pick up" a peasant Hindu woman, so the people chose to hide themselves to prevent that.

This eRumor says it is an open letter written by poet Claire Braz-Valentine to U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft regarding the decision to cover a female statue with an exposed breast at the justice department. You can look at John Ashcroft and tell he's puckered from head to toe.
