I remember that I cried like a big sissy. They had lined us all up, but they put me in the front and my friend in the back. So I wailed until they finally tossed me in the back of the line. Good times. Good times.

don't remember any first days. Nothing noteworthy happened. Funny thing is I remember smells. and sometimes when I encounter a similar smell, I get nostalgic. The beginning of a school year always seemed to have a certain smell. Kind of a new clothes kind of smell. I can't describe it well.
I do remember when it snowed when I was in kindergarden. But that was a significant event where I live. So it's no surprise that stands out. But no first days stand out. I guess nothing noteworthy happened on them.
I lived in Africa when I was little. Where were lived during the kindagarten age was too remote and didn't have a proper school. So I first went to school when I was 7 after we moved to the 'city'...but was able to start out in grade 2.
Anyhow, my school was located near the local mini-zoo. Turns out the school had brought in one of the lions from the zoo and had it in a caged enclosure at the school for some time (maybe for a educational exercise...don't know the reason). So that's what I remember from my first day at school.
Well, that plus the fact that I peed in my pants coz I was too scared to ask the teacher for permission to go to the washroom.
Don't remember the first day of kindergarten. I do remember the last day though. We were all lined up in front of the parents, and the lady was giving out this little "kindergarten graduation diplomas" and said something personal about every kid.
It felt pretty sweet to get the hell out of there after ... what, two or three years? And then I had to go to school.
JM, I don't remember the first day of grad school either, and that was four months ago. It wasn't much different from undergrad though - go to lecture, come home, drink.

Wow! That's awful. I can't believe she did that. Although, if I was there, I'd probably be laughing too much to be offended when she reached my kid.

What about your first day in the Navy?
I remember it very well, taking the bus from O'Hare to Great Lakes Naval Station, being processed until 0345 and then going to bed ang getting woke up at 0430 by a trash can being thrown across the floor.
My first thought, " I want to go home."
ACK!

I do remember that.
Remember waiting forever for a bus (though I don't remember much of the airport). Everything was confusing. They seemed to arbitrarily put people on the bus. Then they lined us up. I can't remember how they divided us up at that point. And I remember cockroaches running around on the ground while we were lined up outside.
Finally got to my rack. I think I fell right asleep. And I do remember that first rude awakening (it wasn't the last). I got up quickly. They were screaming and yelling. And yes there is always that one guy who didn't wake up (don't ask me how). The CC's got right in his face. I remember feeling bad for the guy.
and then there are the smells. Boot bamp had it's own unique smells. Part of it was the swampy smell of the Oralando/Winter Park area which was quite different from the desert. And then there's the RIF smell. Brand new fire retardent dungarees. I didn't smell that the first day though. I think it was a day and a half before we got our clothes. And the other companies would pass by ours sniffing and saying rif. I still don't remember what that means.
And I do remember falling asleep in those boring classes struggling to take notes. I used to fall asleep at the dentist. The dentist was the best part of boot camp.
First day in the army, my thoughts were similar.. it was all just a big confusion at first, but when we hit the bunks and I shared a room with 9 total strangers, all who seemed confused, and it was time to sleep.. my first thought was 'man, this might be a bad idea'. Wasn't able to sleep that night.. second night was better. Still thought 'I wonder if this place is really a good idea for me'.
But when you got the hang of it and make friends with others in there, it's ok, for some, like myself, it even became a fun thing to do.

I remember my first day of Kindergarten. Our room was at the end of a hallway with blue carpeting. There were twenty-two kids in my class. There was a second classroom with another twenty-two kids next to us, and we were separated by double doors. My teachers were Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Cromwell, the teachers of the other class were Mrs. Collishaw and Ms. Andrews. We wore light blue nametags in the shape of fish. One of my classmates' names was Bayly, and I wasn't sure how to pronounce it. The desks were towards the right of the room, and there was open space on the floor on the left side of the room, where we sat in a circle and introduced each other and stuff.
