Techincal question, How do you transfer files between 2 computers

I don't think it's quite proper to say that XP does the pin-switching. Sure, it might be that driver support is needed for it, but if you happen to be unlucky enough that both of the participating NICs are hardwired for Rx pin -> receiver and Tx pin -> transmitter, no OS will be able to do the switching. I don't have any idea how common that kind of inability is, though.

As for the "real os" comment, os is irrelevant, grow up. You run what the apps you want to use run on. This is why I have 7 different operating systems between all of my computers.

OS does matter. If Windows came with a decent terminal emulator, shell, and netcat, I could have just given a slightly expanded form of those commands the first thing in this thread, and it *would* have worked - if TCP/IP networking works, then netcat works, too. Instead, our hero is dicking around with SMB settings, getting confused by workgroups, opaque layers of breaking automation, and endless configuration dialogs.

I get annoyed if I have to do stuff the way I'm used to doing, with the tools I'm used to using. Thus, everything that does not come with the tools I'm used to is a toy .
