Techincal question, How do you transfer files between 2 computers

I have 2 Windows XP computers, connected via ethernet cable.

I need to transfer data from one to another.

Can someone explain how this is supposed to be done? I have a shared folder but the other computer doesn't seem to see it so maybe i am MISSING something?

If it's a small file, I'd use a floppy or else write the files to a CD and move it over.

Its about 2.5 gb and no dvd writer.

Yeah, depends on the size - small would be a USB memory stick, larger would be a CD or even DVD. Any bigger than those and you either need to be plugging the HD into the other computer and transferring the data or seeing if you can set up a LAN between them.

If you're going to be doing this regularly, it may be worth investing in one - they are pretty cheap nowadays...

if you allow Sharing Folder between your 2 computer, you have to name the same workgroups for the two computer!

The problem probably lie in the name of your workgroups... maybe they are not sharing the same name.

although I do it the easy way myself. I just take the hard drive out of one computer and put it in the other. . Okay that's not that easy. But I don't actually own computers. But I do back up stuff on my old hard drive every now and then.

And if you are connected directly via ethernet cable (without having a router) you need to have 2 different IP Address on each computers.

That's what I end up doing for amounts in the many gigabytes...

Via my network. If we're talking unnetworked computers then sending a file via e-mail or a thumb drive would work.

Hm. I'm not sure what it means to assign the 2 computers different IP addreses or use My network . This is interesting , I didn't think transferring a simple folder would be hard, especially since these computers transfer complicated data during LAN games.

You could try making smaller packages of it, with some .zip program. They usually have presets for 1.44 MB floppies. Then just move the file as usual, and unzip in the destination. That's about 1800 floppies, if I did my math right.

Of course, you can re-use one floppy... Imagine getting 1800 floppies for this task!

This is true, I can split the file into parts and burn each onto a CD (I have CD writer, no DVD). Still, I was hoping for a direct-transfer option.

Um what the hell? What's wrong with people these days? hard to transfer a file over an ethernet cable? Easier to transfer a harddisk W T F.

Well uh I assume you already have the sharing enable and a folder shared (sounds like you do) and it sounds like the hardware is set up right (if you play lan games), accessing a share should be a simple as going to "Run..." and entering:

\\computer_name\share_name\

That should work even if the workgroups are screwed up.

If that doesn't work then it might be some screwy WinXP firewall settings - in that case the solution really should be googleable there's about a billion guides to networking computers on the net.
