If they are going to mention him by name, they should be able to produce him and should not be surprised if he is held accountable for what he says. I mean is he a public source or a secret source? What was with the long delay with producing him? Oh...and where is the evidence of the actual burning taking place? Pictures?

Not so much. If sheep dips like Michelle Malkin an others of her ilk hadn't kept his name in the news for the past month and a half, the Iraqi government wouldn't have investigated. If this guy ends of dead, Michelle Malkin, Glen Reynolds, and other right-wing bloggers are responsible.

If the job of the media is to challenge the state, even sometimes when the state turns out to be right, why should it not be the job of the blogosphere to challenge the media, even though sometimes the media turns out to be right?
Because the right blogistan's objections relied exclusively on extremely self-interested states who haven't had a record of being honest telling the truth. And with this sliver of "evidence," the conclusion is that the AP are traitors (just as the NYT are traitors for outing the NSA programs). Any skepticism should start with IF Stone's motto, that all governments lie.
"Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way. "

The U.S. military and the Iraqi Interior Ministry raised the doubts about Hussein in questioning the veracity of the AP's initial reporting on the incident, and the Iraqi ministry suggested that many news organization were giving a distorted, exaggerated picture of the conflict in Iraq. Some Internet bloggers spread and amplified these doubts, accusing the AP of having made up Hussein's identity in order to disseminate false news about the war.
Most journalists are too busy dodging bullets or trying to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table to have time to manipulate the news. Besides, as the above quote demonstrates, many governments, interest groups and parts of the blogosphere are more than happy to undertake that particular task.

But, hey, it's a tradition to kill the messenger. And God knows, traditions are sacred!

Most Western reporters in Iraq are holed up in their hotels inside the relatively safe Green Zone, taking credit for the work of the Iraqi stringers who are actually out in the dangerous parts of the country getting the news.

Of course, those stringers aren't vetted very carefully, so god knows which ones are telling us what's really going on and which ones are spreading propaganda. Leave it to the media to give the Bush Adminstration a run for its money in general incompetence and failure...

Most Western reporters can't leave the safety of the Green Zone. If they do, not only do they put themselves at great risk, but also any of those they are with.

This isn't standard war zone risk. They are targets, not bystanders.
