Yeah, like down to the end of your drive to pick up the mail cos you're too ****ing fat and lazy to walk...Originally posted by DanS
You're forgetting a couple of possible causes, such as the fact that Americans drive far more than others.
You should have notices on the sides of your roads saying "Obesity Kills!"...
Using that logic you would all have to be driving about 3x as much as all of us.

In California, pedestrials are pretty tame. They'll trot across the street against a "Don't Walk" sign, but usually they'll respect a red light.
...Then suddenly about two weeks ago, I noticed that almost everyday these yahoos began crossing against the red...in front of oncoming traffic.
Bless the car drivers, they just honked their horns and the foul pedestrians scrambled for their lives.

Your population drives less often and for shorter periods. I think those are the main factors in the statistical difference. That either makes us far better drivers than the US - or our pedestrians are far smarter!
The joke about getting the mail via car aside (The Gods Must be Crazy is a great film, though), we all know that Americans drive a lot more than Brits. Our country is much larger and our towns/cities are designed poorly from the standpoint of pedestrians. We also rely heavily (moreso than Britain, I would think) on trucking for moving goods. Truckers often drive for loooong periods of time and there have been many scary articles written about truckers hopped up on speed to stay awake.
If you drive more often and for longer periods of time, you are more likely to screw up. That seems logical to me.
I was on the road for 4.5 hours yesterday. That's a combination of having been in northern Vermont for the weekend and bad traffic in Massachusetts.

Funny, I thought the Cairenes were amazingly good drivers - total crazy mother****ers where the rules of the road do not apply though!I thought Americans were bad but a quick visit to Cairo demonstrated my error.
A trip in a taxi with one of them is like a surreal bout of crazy virtual dodgems!

I never saw anyone stop for a traffic light. And yes the cabbies are unbelievable. They only use one hand on the wheel because the other is hovering over the horn. If it's a stick, they use no hand on the wheel.Originally posted by MOBIUS

They get points for hitting people. 3 and they lose their license. Every cab I was in, the driver had 2.
Hit and run occurances is high since no one want the big 3rd one.
And due to high reliability of the vehicles
, the sides of all major highways are lined with broken cars. Usually it's a large family that decides it's a good time for a picnic. Kids are wandering onto the highways. Yes, quite a dodgems.

We average about 10,000 miles a year driving here. I don't consider myself an excessive driver and I racked up about 10,000 miles last year and I commuted to work in the car a grand total of twice! As for length of time behind the wheel, because our country is so incredibly population dense compared to the US we suffer hugely from traffic jams and it just taking a longer time to travel a short distance, and time is the factor.Originally posted by Arrian

Our truckers are reknowned for driving long hours and long distances - ours head all the way into Europe, not just driving here in the UK.Our country is much larger and our towns/cities are designed poorly from the standpoint of pedestrians. That just seems like stupidity if you ask me: If you are getting tired, you rest - even taking 5 minutes to fill up disengages the mind from the monotony of driving enough to refresh you significantly. If you drive more often and for longer periods of time, you are more likely to screw up. That seems logical to me.
But I bet you don't do that every day...I was on the road for 4.5 hours yesterday. That's a combination of having been in northern Vermont for the weekend and bad traffic in Massachusetts.

I was there for about a week all told, so from thinking they all had a deathwish I actually realised there was a method to their madness! IIRC the horns were used as extra signals depending on the number of beeps, same with the headlights at night - which are normally off!Originally posted by rah

Yeah, one of our cabs broke down and we had to get another! But considering they are all Peugeot 504's, Renault 12's and equivalent Fiats, it is hardly a surprise...And due to high reliability of the vehicles

My favourite though was the giant convex rear-view mirrors they had where you could basically see everything behind you for about 270 degrees! I should have imported one!

I like driving too, but now that I walk to work, I don't miss the driving commute at all. I wouldn't mind the commute, if the car drove itself. Besides, I could hit happy hour before the drive home. :beer:Originally posted by Arrian
As much as that would suck, you're probably right. Sigh.
I *like* driving. At least during non-rush hour situations.
But the statistics are hard to ignore.

As some already have pointed out, Middle East drivers are the worst, with Egypt as the most horrible example. I've read statistics that back this claim up, but don't expect me to dig it up for you.

There's all kinds of rules and regulations about how much rest truck drivers must take, about their breaks, etc. Unfortunately, they don't get paid for not driving, so lots of the rules get ignored.
