I'm generally of the opinion that there is no such thing as "you" or "I." Given the continuously changing state of the human body and mind, the concept of an individual is an artificial one that we ascribe to the collected attributes of a specific physical appearance, personality, and set of memories.

Whatever most people agree identifies with one of those sets of collected attributes is who a specific individual, "you" or "I," is.

I think the question, "After I'm cloned/teleported/reassembled is it me or someone who just thinks it's me?" is a meaningless question.

The "me" that I am aware of is simply the only clump of awareness that has survived the changes a body and mind undergoes, and may or may not have any connection to previous clumps of awareness that existed within this construct of me.

Hypothetical. A situation that you don't presently face.

That's the definition I use too. I wonder how you thought it might be other than an idle question

I'd be more interest in the practical applications, rather than the philosophical (because I consider myself to be whoever I wake up as). Suppose you commited a murder before this operation, who would stand trial for it, Twiddledee or Tweedledum, or both? Suppose you have a wife/husband, who is the legal spouse? etc...

in this country I suspect 'double jeopardy' safeguards would insure that only one of the 'twins' would have to serve time for the crime. Presumably one could turn the other in and once the other was convicted would be safe from any prosecution for the crime.

Cavemen like you are not meant to participate in philosophical discussion.

This is just a pointless thread open to cavemen and non cavemen alike. Philosophical discussions sound way too exclusive for my tastes.

Is it possible that an "individual" "dies" essentially every time their mindstate changes in any way whatsoever so that a single person is in fact zillions of discrete people over their lifetimes who remain oblivious to their infintesimaly short lifetimes due to the illusion of perfect continuity that memory provides?

                                Yes.

Infact some late philosopher said that "you" are merely a decision making mechanism, with a series of memories.
Your "present" is non-existant, as time constantly moves.
The only thing that defines you is what you recall of your life.

Thus, f**k with someone's memory, and you've basically killed him.

                                That's why I wouldn't care for a second life, or being re-born.

What's the point of living again if you don't remember your old life? It is exactly like being dead!
