What defence do we have against politically-motivated scientists?

What defense do we have against scientifically-motivated scientists and politicians?
Scientific-based policy is noy too much of a problem so long as people know what they are voting for; the problem lies in trusting scientists who may be trying to pervert policy for their own ideologies through their politically-determined studies.
There are plenty of scientists to go around, so there will always be some scientists who will question the recommendations of the biased scientists. Heck, there will always be some scientists who will question even good solid findings. It is the duty of both sides to intelligently present their case(s) in a manner suitable to the general public. It should be the duty of the media to convey those arguements to the public.
Was there something you specifically had in mind?

Exactly. It's the whole purpose of peer reviewing - people are free to challenge it and test it. It's what keeps scientists honest.

True...as far as it goes.
But Park Avenue might be one to something. Usually, scientists perform experiments which can be peer-reviewed by other scientists. I can remember the great break through in "cold fusion" in the late 80's, which crumbled when other scientists were unable to get the same results in their laboratories.
But what about when scientists are making projections? Someone above mentioned global warming, which is an okay example for the purposes of our discussion.
There's plenty of evidence that the globe is, on average, heating up. I'm with the majority who thinks that this is due, a least in large part, to human actions. Others though, think we're observing just a natural cycle. How can other scientist check these theories in their labs?
