not really. $50 in a tanning salon is all it takes in my city. . And my city has lots of sun, yet tanning salons are fairly popular. I'm not sure if the cost is $50, never been to one. But I doubt they cost that much.

The point is that such a thing even exists, people want to be tanned rathen then powder their faces white. Given that desire its not suprizing that we invented an accelerated tanning process and marketed it to the masses.

Interesting, I'm wondering how this came about as you would think that at one point everyone was more homoginous. Given the Indian caste system its concivable that a selective preshure for fair skin could have over the centuries resulted in a significant genetic difference in the different castes.

There always has been many different ethnies in India, I see no reason to believe that it was more homogeneous say 500 years ago.

In China there's a preference for fairer skin. I believe that it's because darker skin gives the impression of field workers and general poverty. Eventually, they'll all just go goth, like the Japanese geishas are a few steps away from.

Yeah. I believe that is all part of the Arryan invasion theory. That is Indo-Europeans from central Asia invaded the subcontinent and set up the caste system to preserve their line due to being vastly outnumbered by the native people.

well, In many latin american countries, you have a wealthy 10-20% that looks whiter and rules the country, who are mainly descendants of spanish colonizers, and rest darker natives or mixed ancestry groups.

I think that most Indians are highly sun sensitive too. My ex-sister in law was from Bihar. She would be pretty pasty in the winter but darken up quite abit during the summer.
