  • Hogfather hits the small screen!

I couldn't find the other thread - even with the search function, so here we go. Sky One in the UK showed Part 1 of Pratchett's 'Hogfather' last night, and even though I didn't enjoy the book as much as other Discworld volumes, it was an excellent production for TV, I thought - despite two slight drawbacks.

The first negative is that they are pushing David Jason, who I don't like, as a lead player, when he actually plays a minor character, while alongside him Ian Richardson (the best actor ever imo) is playing Death (the central character of the story and one of the best characters in fantasy fiction anywhere). The other thing is that the wizards of Ankh Morpork are in this story, and I just don't find these guys funny at all compared to other characters and institutions in the books. They are slapstick clowns, basically, and it might be their presence that limited my enjoyment of the book in the first place.

On the plus side - the audio-visual production was superb through last night's episode, Ian Richardson was perfect as Death, Susan was a good portrayal, and Mr Teatime had villainy in abundance. The scripties did OK in the tricky task of keeping the plot updated without the constant narrative of the book. The overall atmosphere was superb.

I can't wait for Part 2 tonight, and hope that Hogfather is the first of many TV productions of Discworld, as popularisation of the books might ween people off the embarrasing infantialia that is Harry Potter and get them on to some proper books.

    Sounds rather nerdy..

Should I put a smiley here? Sure, why not. Christmas season is after all upon us.

No. I can assure you that many people who have no history of spending intense amount of time in the company of computers or Sci-Fi books are Pratchett fans.

There was a thread concerning hogfather a few weeks ago btw. (although I don´t remember the title).

SO, HOW DID THEY MAKE DEATH SPEAK UPPERCASE IN THE MOVIE?
Tamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. I arrive on winds of blessed air. Air that you no longer deserve."
Tamsin (Lost Girl): "He has fallen in battle and I must take him to the Einherjar in Valhalla"

A lot of reverb, with a kind of reverse-delay effect which created a neat hollow space for the words to manifest in. Also by casting the brilliant Ian Richardson. Few actors can convey the authority that he can.

I'd love to have that reverb effect when I speak.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

I really enjoyed the first episode. Didn't see the second as I was out but hopefully my housemates Sky+ed it.

It was fun seeing Corporal Nobbs! Though he wasn't as disgusting as I imagined. Also they gave Visit an Uberwald accent, I thought he was Omnian!

I thought Uberwald was Germanic. Visit sounded Russian/Slavic to me.

I thought Uberwald was Eastern European/Transylvanian. The mixing up of 'v's and 'w's and all the vampires, werewolves etc who live there.

Anyways, my impression of Omnia was that it represented the Middle East.

You have a point there wrt vampires - but Transylvania is a small corner of Romania, and Uberwald seems a big place. The numerous big, Gothic castles make me think of Germany, and I'm sure that in the game 'Discworld Noir', the Uberwaldian Count was Germanic.

Now I think of it, surely Otto zee photographer hass a German accent, no?

Perhaps Uberwald is wherever the Hammer films are set.

Haven't seen part 2 yet, but 1 came out pretty good. A few points:

Death's jaw doesn't move. I know it isn't supposed to move when he talks because he doesn't talk, but it moves other times to show expressions, eat, etc. It makes him look more Halloween-masky.

Mr. Teatime's eyes came out genuinely freaky.

I was disappointed with Hex. If nothing else, I expected more ants.

They spent a bit more time explaining what was going on than I would have liked, but I understand it's necessary when you're translating a book into a movie, particularly when you just pick the book from the middle of a series.

I'm hope the second part came out as well as the first, since that's where things started to really get moving.
