A proposed conference that stirred ire in Germany earlier this year is now slated to take place next week. Iran is behind the meeting, which is expected to be a platform for Holocaust deniers.

The denial of the Holocaust, the Shoah. It’s the main objective of all this…
Recently, the same jerk made a cartoon contest in Iran, sponsored by state, if I'm not wrong, about the same theme. The Holocaust. Friends asked me to participate, good prizes and all… Of course, the contest became an anti-zionist fest…
Nope. I’m a “serious” cartoonist… How can I participate and legitimate this kind of bullsh*t?

Boy, I'm getting older and tired. I can't stand this kind of thing anymore...

It's striking how so many of the people who deny the holocaust want to make another one. One can't help wondering whether they believe their own denial or just seek to use the idea for propaganda.

I don't understand what Ahmadinejad hopes to gain by this. It kills his bargaining position outside the Middle East.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

you assume he seriously wants a bargain. He may not. And it strengthens his position with many mideasterners, who believe this stuff, and think he has the courage to say things their own govts wont.

                    Total moron

However, I have to say that he's right in that he has a right to claim that it did not exist, and back said claim up with evidence. He's wrong, and he's a moron for saying it, but I firmly believe that holocaust denial laws are the first step in a new totalitarianism. Show people that it existed; don't prohibit debate. Not only is it harmful to liberty to prohibit free speech, but it simply fuels the tinfoil hats and government conspiracy theorists, and forces the discussion underground, where it won't be in the presence of people to refute the lies.

I doubt China, India, and Russia give a damn.

The Holocaust bears little significance for most people in Asia or Africa. To them its just another act of mass murder. They all have tragedies that are more relevant or important to them. Its not the issue it is in Europe or the US.

They may not care as much about the Shoah, but the educated among them still know that holocaust denial is crankery, and cant be too impressed by him inviting the likes of David Duke. It still makes him look like a fool to them.

I would also question that Russians dont care. Some of the deniers at the conf deny that there were any gas chambers, which would seem to deny the gassing of Russian POWs. Wouldnt Russians care about that?

I assume that if and when Iran's Fuhrer visits Germany or Austria, he will be arrested for his crimes. (At least, I hope so.)

Most people around the world don't know who David Duke is, nor care. As for them "knowing" that holocaust denial is crankery, I think you overestimate Holocaust knowledge in general, especially in parts of the world were again it is just another historical fact.

Russian POW's were generally NOT gassed. Gas chambers were almost exclusively located in extermination camps, which were set up especifically to eradicate the Jewish population. The vast majority of Soviet POWs died through exposure, starvation and disease, all made worst by being used as slave laborers.

Russia has a long and sad history of anti-semitism. Added to that fact is the reality that non-Jewish Soviet citizens died by the millions as well. This takes away from the "uniqueness" of the Holocaust in the sense that the peoples form the Soviet UNion can all claim to have been victims of mass slaughter, and all would have been victims of attempted genocide had the Nazis not lost. So why should Russians remmeber the slaughter of millions of Jews as something more unique than the slaughter of millions of Russians?
