Probably a few thousand less than we have now. But only if I can choose those few thousand myself

How low should the population of the world be, if we want every human to reach a standard of life like the one of the sluts in sex and the city?

One third of the current one?

Er, you're holding up that sort of life as something to avoid, aren't you? I hope?

500 million or less sounds about ball park for me for a long term sustainable population living at European levels of efficiency/standard of living. If American then 300 mill. And in both cases we have to make the unlikly asumption that these rates of consumption remain fixed.

No lower number is going to be any better than what we have now so long as humanity (as a whole) behaves as it does.

                            "best"? That's pretty dodgy criteria.

I say the optimum number is 6; a couple of farmers to provide food and tobacco, a guy to operate the electric works (preferably from solar power), some Asher-type fellow to keep the Internets going, the cleaning lady.. and myself - proud owner of the world's only handgun.

Truth be told, from an ecological concerns perspective, the optimum number is probably not much beyond 200,000.

Something funny is that for centuries France alone had a higher population than all America, If I recall correctly in the middle XVIII century spanish america had around 17 million people, the thirteen colonies like 2 million, french america less than 100.000m while France had well over 20 million people.
France was the demographic giant of europe till Napoleon ruined them.

Now Brazil more than doubles France in population, the USA has over 4 times the French population.

It its like humns always fill the empty space
