Yes, I know, but still it is hard to imagine 7 million people in prison, it is like a whole country, 7 million was the Population of Spain in 1492.


I think in Uruguays, for example I remember reading once that Michael Jackson´s thriller sold 50 million albums, and thinking, wow! that is like 15 Uruguays!

I guess China must be far worse, they probably have over 30 million people in prison easily

Not that relative - land area has little to do with prison population. Texas has less than a third of the population of either Britain or France. Meanwhile the incarceration rate per 100,000 people was 85 for France, 139 for the UK and 686 for the US in 2003. I might add that figure does not include people out on probation.

Texas also impressively had 207,526 people incarcerated (again, not out on probabation) in 1999 whereas France had 50,714 in 2003 and the UK in the 80,000 range.

past time to concede the drug war. I'd honestly rather hav them out of jail screwing up their lives with addiction than vegging out in a cell at taxpayer expense. How jail time is somehow more productive and desirable than habitual illicit drug use I have no idea.

Depends on the drug IMO. Pot can be legalized for all I care (though only if eaten rather than smoked). Crystal meth, crack, and PCP? Hell no.
