            Good that he won.

Now, maybe he could try to prop up a team and make his ****ing regime not entirely revolve around his person?

Chavez wins re-election by a wide margin
AP - Mon Dec 4, 6:55 AM ET

CARACAS, Venezuela - Emboldened by a resounding re-election, President Hugo Chavez pledged to shake up Venezuela with a more radical version of socialism and forge a wider front against the United States in Latin America. Opposition contender Manuel Rosales accepted defeat Sunday night, but promised to continue countering a leader whom he accuses of becoming increasingly authoritarian.

BTW, the reason Latin-American leftism is so anti-American is that America is the big bully in the schoolyard. Any time these countries attempted to do something remotely popular, the U.S. overthrew the government and put in someone friendly to our business interests. You'd be a hater too.
Che, I think in every case, US invovlement was predicated on a direct threat to US people or property. The one exception, I believe, was our intervention in the Cuban civil war lead to our war against the Spanish Empire.

Now that is the actuality. I think the perception in Latin America is what you say it is, largely due to communist propaganda.

I kind of like Chavez, like I like Castro. But like Cuba would be better off without Castro, so would Venezuela without Chavez.

I mean, why can't they elect someone remotely sane, like Lula of Brazil?

There was alos the Roosevelt corilary of the Monroe doctrine. During Teddy's term several European states threatened to invade Latin American countries which had reputiated foreign owned debts. The Americans worked out a compromise with the European powers where the Americans would act as international lawmen in Latin America and the Europeans would agree to stay out of the western hemisphere.

The end result is the US occupied, at one time or another, most central American and a few south American countries took control of their ports, extracted import and export duties, and used the money to pay the Europeans. The 1st rate powers were happy because it meant Latin American nations were forced to repay the money they had borrowed but naturally the Latin American states hated the idea of big bad Yankees acting like big brother and telling them what to do.

Then I guess no govt in the region has done anything remotely popular since 1973, since that was the last US supported coup (and that coup was essentially run by locals, with only winking support from the US - youd have to go back to the 1960s for a REAL CIA planned coup)

More the aftermath of the Span Am war, I think. We won with the SUPPORT of Cuban insurgents. Its when he established a quasi-protectorate afterwards that they grew disillusioned.
