I had started to regret flaming him the other day. Not any more. He just keeps parroting the same crap regardless of what anyone says.

Isn't that the way it works? It's certainly that way in the musical world, for instance. You can make it big in the UK, but you haven't really made it until you crack America...KH FOR OWNER!

The point about Douglas Adams is that he was such a rare genius that very few people in the world ever can come anywhere near him.
So, there won't be a ton of Adams-style writers about, because hardly anyone else can do it. What Jon refuses to acknowledge is that ordinary lives can be influenced by writers, not just other writers. This makes him more influential, not less.

Umm, I am asking for examples of the influence.. and you guys can't provide many. If I thought this was just a game of silly buggers, I would have never put the effort into this thread that I did.
It's like me saying "I think that Bujold is an amazing author, with a lot of insight, who everyone should read. Obviously she is hugely influential." And she is an amazing author... and maybe is even influential among sci fi people, but she isn't influential in the culture as a whole.
And from everything I have seen of Britian culture, neither is Douglas Adams.

I vote for Lord Tiddlywinks, inventor of the Scrumpet. Also anybody who says "Gov'nor."

I'd put
1. Elizabeth I, the foundation stone of the Empire of the English. No one in modern history has had as much effect.
2. Isaac Newton, science begins here
3. Adam Smith, economics begins here
4. William Shakespeare, the language lives here. See 1
I'm undecided about the rest.(\__/)

Shouldn't this be in the history forum?"You're the biggest user of hindsight that I've ever known. Your favorite team, in any sport, is the one that just won. If you were a woman, you'd likely be a slut." - Slowwhand, to Imran
