this is a west coast trait. ironic considering how west coast cities have a distinct lack of public transit

Not so much a west coast trait, but a trait that is stereotypically predominate to certain cultures that live on the west coast.

It's similar in North Carolina. It really depends on how cold the night is after or during the snowfall, whether the whole State shuts down, but generally a whole inch will do it. It's never been a problem, I don't think.

Plus, you don't have to go into work, right? Why are you complaining? I love snow days off.

That's because they get lots of snow so the city is prepared for it and has the equipment to clear it from the roads. It also helps that the people are used to driving in icy conditions where as people who aren't experienced in that find their cars sliding and freak out. Hell, in places which get little rain the freeway always gets jammed on rainy days because dumb asses are to stupid to stop driving 90 and breaking at the last minute.

Atlanta shuts down in half an inch of snow. It's sad, but the people down here aren't used to it at all.

so true, so true.

over here in the bay area we have two types of really bad drivers. the first are people who've just moved to America and are driving for the first time. They're the ones doing 25 in the fast lane and ignoring road signs.

then, there are the people who've just moved up from SoCal and treat every road as if it were a freeway, doing 55 on a side street and ignoring road signs... intentionally. and they all forget how to drive when it rains.


But if you really want some crazy driving, nothing quite tops the homegrown tradition of ghostriding.

Funny, in SoCal everyone says it is the NorCal people who can't drive. In SoCal everyone makes fun of the NorCal drivers because they drive like old women and never seem to see any of the road signs. Typically they will be the ones with the save the planet bumper sticker who insist on driving 45 mph in the fast lane in a 70 mph zone. They are completely oblivious to what is going on around them.

my city wouldn't shut down for 1 inch of snow. Maybe the goverment centers would. but there's too much money to be lost for the casinos to even think about closing (and they never do- unless someone is killed on the floor)
