the use of the specific word by Bush in reference to countries that are supposedly "allies"...
It is a term used by NATO. The NATO committees give assignments to member nations -- eg, Canada is assigned to the toughest part of Afghanistan. And Canadians, being tough and brave and categorically non-European, accepted this mission with pride.
Meanwhile, the European nations are afraid of breaking their nails.

Waht about the UK
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

UK is in the middle, as they are geographically as well.

Question for the Germans and French (and Italians and Spanish):
Care to help out?

You know, the United Kingdom and Denmark are also on assignment in the toughest part of Afghanistan.
And these two countries will be co-sponsoring the criticism towards members like Germany, France, Spain and Italy at the summit.
It's rather a fundamental issue of how we would like the alliance to function and proceed in the time ahead. An issue of principles, so to speak. Musketeer solidarity or every country for itself. Denmark knows what side it is on.
