I am pretty outraged by how stigmatizing the left-wing press is. Because it would have made a completely different commentary if the other extreme supporter group (the one that is made of Blacks and Arabs) had been at the source of the violence.

Given the identical situation with a crowd of black football hooligans attacking a heavily outnumbered white policeman then they would have been wrong to support the crowd or apologise for it. This time, however, they were right.

And as a matter of record, I didn't read the article carefully enough to find out the racial composition of the crowd or the race of the policeman before my first two comments.

Attack a cop in a manner that threatens his life or the life of somebody he's trying to protect and you will get quite rightly shot.

In that situation a warning shot may have been appropriate or it may have been foolhardy.

Pointing the gun upward and firing takes away precious seconds if you're being rushed by a crowd of people. I would pick the targets which seemed most intent on attacking (the leaders of the rabble) and try to kill them as quickly as possible. Those simply milling around would probably be dissuaded after seeing a few of the more aggressive go down.

As far as I remember, you're supposed to shout ' Halte ou je fais feu' (stop or I shoot) three times before shooting at someone, but that's not for cases of legitimate defense (like 100 vs 1 here). So shooting at the air was probably not an option.
And damn the press. Just about everyone knows that there are many criminals among the PSG fans (and the OM too). Instead of playing football themselves, they play hooliganism when/after looking at a football match. That cop saved his life and that of a man under attack. So bad for those who attacked them.
Now what the press and the politicians say, who really cares?

What can you do. ABout 100 hoolies, aggressive... and you never know, it is an established fact that some of the hoolies are ultra right, ultra violent. They have joined the ranks of hoolies because they can go about and have a fight, mask their nature within 'football fans'.

Then there are hoolies who are not like these, dangerous megafascists, but just violent and love to trash people and places of all races, income level and religion .

So.. as a cop, you are there alone, about 100 of these are after a person you need to protect, you can't really know which one this group is, is it one of those violent equal opportunity hoolies or the ultra right hoolies. That is, you might get racial slurs and threats in that situation, but they don't really mean anything else except fighting words and insults. But to a person being there alone, it's not so simple anymore. They might even kill you. Ultra right OR just violent.

What do you do? There's two lives at stake. The person you are protecting and your own. You have a gun, you draw it, nothing happens.

I'm not saying that it was the right thing to do, I'm saying, I'm not going to judge this police for how things went down. It was self defense. It's not as simple as avoiding a fist fight with a gun, when there's 100 hoolies after your ass, in aggressive state of mind. You might not get out of that one.

What prompted me into creating this thread is the knee-jerk reaction of L'Humanité. Yesterday's frontpage was a pic with football supporters doing the nazi salute, with the title: "Never again!".
