If I were targeting Fortran in my dissertation (like so many have done before me), then I'd already be finished with it.
"We're targeting a run-of-the-mill programming language. Except it doesn't support recursion. Or aliasing. Or dynamic dispatch. And we're assuming that the code isn't very branchy. Oh hell, let's just admit up front that we're targeting Fortran 77 programs."
