  • Microsoft losing big bucks over failing Xbox360 video service

Problems hit Xbox video service Xbox Live

The video download service is US only
Microsoft has promised to refund gamers who have experienced problems with its new Xbox Live video service.

US Xbox 360 owners are able to download high definition TV programmes and films, including shows such as Star Trek and CSI.

But Xbox's Larry Hryb has said "technical issues have resulted in a very unpleasant experience" for users.

Speed problems and video not being delivered is being blamed on "the extremely high number of downloads".

Microsoft has trumpeted its Xbox Live online gaming and download service as its key weapon in the battle for console supremacy with Sony and Nintendo.

"To celebrate its first birthday... Xbox 360 becomes the first and only gaming console to provide HD and standard-definition TV shows and movies direct to you," states the Xbox website.

    Xbox Live
Shows such as CSI are available for download

The announcement of a video download service was made earlier this month, with more than 750 hours of TV and films promised - both in standard and high definition quality.

Gamers can buy TV programmes but the movies are rented and are automatically deleted from the console's hard drive after a fixed period.

"We've made progress over the past 24 hours, and the team is dedicated to fixing the issues and continues to work as fast as they can around the clock to get the service running as seamlessly as you have come to expect," wrote Mr Hryb, who is Xbox Live's director of programming, on his Major Nelson Xbox blog.

Xbox owners experiencing problems have been told to contact customer support on 1-800-4MYXBOX.

The problems reflect the difficulty companies - even those of the size of Microsoft - are having in getting video into the online age.

Video content in high definition results in very large file sizes - which can put a strain on servers when delivering content to thousands of people at the same time.

Some gamers are reporting that they are receiving different programmes from the ones they have paid for, while others have complained downloads are taking hours to arrive.

A standard definition TV programme costs $2 (£1.03), while a high definition version costs $3 (£1.55). Rental costs for films are $4 (£2.06) in standard definition and $6 (£3.10) in high definition.

Anyone getting refunds over this? Its amazing how MS Xbox team still makes these kinds of amateur screw ups. They run out of bandwidth!? In 2006?

    "big bucks"?

Delivering highdefinition content on such a massive scale has never been done before. Demand was far higher than they anticipated, and you try to spin this into a very derogatory article?

Meanwhile, Sony is genuinely losing big bucks and making far more amateurish mistakes on far larger scales, far more often.

You should focus more on how far behind Sony is from Microsoft. Even with only a handful of consoles, Sony's PS3 online store was extremely slow throughout the week. And they're still missing tons of Xbox Live functionality, despite the 1 year delay for the PS3.

I didn't try to actually pay for and download any movies or TV shows, but I can see how people could have run into problems with bandwidth issues. I was quite tempted to download a few shows, but I wasn't sure about how it would all work as far as the files being stuck in my 360, so I held back.

Is this where you say "8/10" for results?

Only in Finland is overwhelmingly successful = failing.

              This is where I say

"we need to allow some time for XBL to (quickly) overcome these minor startup problems before passing judgement, but so far it seems like MS has with this latest service shown what a great online network can and should do. Sony, I hope you're taking notes."

I'm not worried at all. Au contraire. I'm sure PS3 will prove to be champion once again. I'm even considering getting one myself.

As you might have heard, analysts agree with me. Strategy Analysts predicts PS3 will sell 121.8 million consoles in the next 6 years. Xbox 360 on the other hand is predicted not to even reach half of this. Maybe you should stop pouring money to the obvious loser.

Analysts pull numbers out of their asses. And who is "Strategy Analysts"?

I'm sure you know other analysts, such as a much more reputable Merrill Lynch, predict the 360 to remain king this generation..

So half the world rushed to download movies from X0 video service, and MS wasent prepared? Oh come on

You know what probably happened. Their Windows servers crashed due to a graphic card driver or some ****

Strain my ass. If it runs on MS software, toss it.

If we needed any more evidence that you're worried about the Playstation's future, this thread is it. It's so desperate that it's hilarious.

Especially considering the PS3's software is getting totally blasted by reviewers as being incomplete, buggy, and half-assed...while the 360's has been praised.

Oh yes I almost forgot. X0 software is like titanium compared to the Sony bubble gum code. And yet its the X0 video service that is failing
