OK, the guy sounds like a nationalist asshat but if he can teach dirt poor people to read then he'll have done something useful for the whole country. Hopefully, the education will focus on skills these people really need and can use (reading, writing, math, and some sort of trade skill) instead of political propoganda but even if there is some propoganda mixed in it would still be worth it if the people gained the other skills.

No political propaganda here. Just plain reading, writing, and arithmetic, along with whatever other trade-type skills tribal people need (the teacher, himself being from one of the people he is teaching, is in a prime position to tackle the unique problems faced by his community).

Sounds like something that naive idealists might fall for. I doubt any of it is as stated. Also kind of reminds me of proposals for Missionary programs or the statements of 'nondenominational' churches.

Am I supposed to like Mao's cultural revolution?

As for this one, I've heard it all before from churches here and didn't like it, so I don't know what you're getting at. Unless you're trying to slander me.

Smiley, why is it when I criticize Bush, Republicans, Christianity, Russia, Apolyton, and just about anything else many, many times, people either ignore it or cheer? But dare I share an opinion on something asian that doesn't paint it as glorious, I am immediately attacked as a racist? And why is it always from asians that these unfair attacks originate?

And, finally, why whenever I bring this up, do they cower away?

asians suffer from persecution complex when it wasnt asians that were hanging from lamp posts. they also suffer from middle child syndrome, in that they feel underrepresented by the mainstream media when they fail to realize that they are smaller in the general population than any other minority group.

This something Asian actually is positive, because it's working, for once, instead of failing, as most governmental projects do in India.

And I have never accused you of being a racist, so that's an ad-homimen and a strawman combined into one.

                      As for cowering away:

                      You overestimate yourself.

If it is working, then good. But I'm just cautious of things that seem too good to be true.

I'm not talking about you at here. But I'll say that I haven't noticed you making any such accusations against me or others. Also, evem though you're often wrong , you do stand up for your arguments. How you thought this was about you, is anyone's guess.

A lot of things happening in India will look too good to be true, because they are the harbingers of the Classical Indian renaissance - institutions long dead are being resurrected, and their effects seem nothing short of miraculous to the outside observer.

You made a general statement, so I thought I should reply.

I've noticed this a favourite tactic of yours - make a general statement, then when someone answers it, try to make out that he/she is in some way screwed up/insecure for answering it. Pseudo-psycho-analysis.

Ones that bear no resemblence to their inspiration, probably. Standard reform tactics - dress up something new as something old to appease wrathful conservatives.

It was hardly a general statement. Although, I did try not to name names.

It wasn't just that you replied, it was how you replied.

I asked Smiley. I refered to people who behaved a specific way. If you didn't fit any of those criteria, then you needn't answer it unless you have an answer. You didn't have an answer. You talked about yourself as if it was about you. So don't give me this bull****. I've said before, I don't think you fit that criteria, so I don't know why you replied the way you did. But I'm now curious to know.

Also, if this is a favorite tactic, please show where I have used it before. Because I don't believe that I've ever used the tactic you are claiming you have. Although, your tactic here is actually ad hominem a term you improperly used before. You insult me to distract from the issue (that you bizarrely answered my questions). Now smiley's, response to me was a strawman, because it had nothing to with the topic at hand. My response to a strawman cannot be a strawman. You could also say smiley's post was ad hominem because he implies that I am a racist rather than address the issue.

Class is over. Talk to me when you've learned something.
