  • Headphones: is it worth getting an expensive one?

I have an ipod and a computer which I occasionally use headphones for, but they recently broke. I was wondering what the difference in quality between expensive headphones and cheapo ones are. Can anyone fill me in?
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

AT least with durability there seems to be no big difference.

The expensive ones don´t last longer than the cheaper ones.
Unless of course you buy wireless headphoneslike I have for my TV set.
As they have no cables that can break (aside from the connection between sender and TV of course) they last much longer than regular headphones

I bought a $30 pair of headphones from Best Buy about 4 years ago and they work great. I almost purchased $150 pair, which did sound a little better, but decided against it.

I'm a headphone whore, since I have 12y old, I have a pair of headphone on my ear each day of my life.

Is there a difference in quality? Yeah, a lot!!!! Since I have my SennHeiser headphones, I can't stand having cheap headphones!

One of my friend have Grado heaphone: Look the review over the net, this headphone worth less than 100$ and has good review

Otherwise for really low-budget heaphones, try these ones: Around 39-49$(CDN) Best quality/price ratio i've seen for(low budget) headphones. (User review of 9.1 on CNET)

You'll enjoy your iPod a lot more with decent headphones. The stock ear buds are garbage. OTOH, buying 600$ headphones would be over the top, IMO.

The first thing I bought with my iPod was a pair of Sennheiser PX 100. They were about 100$ cdn including taxes. I'm satisfied with them, except for two things.

First, the cord is too long for a MP3 player, it tends to get caught into things. But its not nearly long enough for home listening.

Second, the base of the headphone's plug is in metal, so it tends to set off my iPod's stupid, stupid auto-pause feature. The iPod auto-pauses when you disconnect the headphone. In principle, its a good idea, but it doesn't work well with my Sennheiser's. Its constantly auto-pausing. The only solution I found was to put some cellophane on the base of the headphone's plug.

The Sennheiser PX100 is simply the perfect portable headphone to upgrade the so-called headphones or earbuds that originally came with your Mp3, iPod, DiscMan or other portable player device. An open-backed and highly efficient design, these small, lightweight headphones deliver amazingly crisp, punchy sound with a strong bass response even when used straight out of a portable audio source. The open-backed PX100 earcups provide no ambient noise-blocking, but allow the listener to remain aware of their surroundings -- important if listening in city traffic! And if coming up with a headphone that sounds slightly better than the previous winner in this category (the Koss PortaPro) wasn't quite enough, the PX100 is also a bit better looking, more durable, and has the nifty ability to fold up tiny like a pair of sunglasses. This might be the best "open" headphone for under $50 bucks, and a perfect choice for great listening on the go, at the gym, or directly from your laptop computer or iPod.

The PX100 achieves a comfortable fit using a super-lightweight metal headband with two pleather-covered cushions resting on either side of the top of your head. The small supra-aural earpads are constructed of a fairly soft foam mesh material. The headband folds at two sturdy hinge points located just outside the pads; the earpads swivel 90 degrees and tiny detents interlock the side band pieces to make a conveniently small package that, when folded, easily stores in your shirt pocket, bookbag, or backpack. The headphone also comes with a protective hard-sided plastic carrying case that is nicely secure, but is rather awkward to deal with on a daily basis.
Check here for some good reviews.

I spent 80 euros for my laptop wireless headphones. Best purchase ever.

Yes, they're supposed to be very good. But they're outrageously expensive here in Canada. GR-60 are about 60 bucks in the States and about 120$ cdn here in Canada. And there doesn't seem to be any way to order them directly from the States.

Plus they're ugly and not confortable.

Tell me if this exists: a wireless headset that can be used with your landline, cellphone, computer, iPod, and even can plug into those dorky airplane audio jacks.

That would truly be the holy grail.

Low-price was not among my criteria. If such a thing exists, I'd be interested.

Since I have kids my headphones rarely last more than a few months, so I've learned that I might as well by cheapos. The sound isn't as nice but I don't feel so bad when someone's friend "accidently" rips the wires out.
