But how do the dimensions of a circle translate into the sphere(oid) that is the Earth? Because we're certainly not going through its diameter...
Ok....let me get another example. If I fly from Montreal to siberia, why do they fly from east to west instead of goin north directly?

Spec, can your friend explain how I can fly from Houston to, say, Bogota by going only East or West?

You probably would go north as part of a great circle route. I know that when you fly from Vancouver to London, for example, you go over the Arctic.

A friend of mine that travels around the world a lot told me they dont.

Tell him he's wrong. Fuel economy alone dictates that planes always take the shorter route.
On a personal note, i'm from Abitibi - north of Montreal - and i can tell you that the population in our region doesn't match with the numbers of jets we see flying overhead - and that's only when the weather conditions make it possible for us to see them.

That's probably because they don't have direct flights from Montreal to wherever in Siberia you'd be going.

Displays a map on which the great circle path for one or more
routes is plotted and calculates the distance along each route. Ranges
from one or more locations may also be plotted, along with go/no-go
areas for ETOPS operations at various rule times.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

You see, I was told differently. That's it, I'll just call Air Canada, they tell me...Why bother asking when you've got people like Ramo and JM that would rather laugh than answer...
Probably cause these kinds of guys were laughed at their whole way threw school and now they are just taking it out on a forum for lack of confidence.
When I dont know something, I am not afraid to ask...But I expect some help, not being laughed at. I never laugh at someone that doesn't know something I know, I answer and hope to help him the best way I can.
I am sorry if I dont spend most of my life on a computer or reading books all the time.
