While it might be a great show of panache to pop your cork and scream, "I quit, you @ssholes!!" it's not a wise thing to do if you have nowhere to go.

I've quite without having another job to go to (in 2002) and it wasn't a pretty business. I have been very averse to doing the same thing ever since, even though I have seriously felt like it. There was a point in early 2005 where I was prepared to tell them to stick their job up their arse - one of the things that winds me up more than anything else is not being led by example - or completely ignoring everything you do right and picking on the few, and frankly irrelevent things that don't contribute to your job, to hold against you (especially things beyond your control and they were informed were beyond my control). I fortunately got transferred to a project which is a better job (it's not so much workload that bothers me, it's all the other crap which I don't have to put up with now - the hierarchy above me is pretty cool). Although if I hadn't, I strongly suspect I would have left by now.

But on the latter point, it is probably not wise to go out kicking and screaming, but certainly make your point clear in no uncertain terms.

I'll be a process engineer for a company called Alkermes that makes drugs for schizophrenia and alcohol dependence and appears to have a pretty good drug pipeline for a young company.

I probably won't burn any bridges, unless advised otherwise... so I should probably stay away from CG as Venom's advise would make me want to.

I left my last job 2 years ago and haven't worked since - which meant I left feeling I had nothing to lose with them (I was thinking of going self employed but never really got into the idea). As it turns out I start a new job tomorrow and needed to give the old employer as a reference. That checked out so everything is fine. Now I will just need to move on from the new job to one that will pay a decent amount of money.

I"m just Chemical Engineering, by degree. However I have worked in aspetic manufacturing of biologics and drug delivery of biologics since 1999. I will be starting off at around $70k/year which is a respectable start at that position. I could expect nickle and dime raises for the next 2 years and then a promotion with a 5-10% promotion at around 3 and 5 years, with bonus' around 5-10%/year. Total compensation at pharma companies is better as they generally have free or cheap health insurance, nice amount of stock options (which has paid me well in the past seeing as I have worked for Genentech and J&J), and a good amount of vacation time.

Still, while the money is alright, it is why I want to go back to school and get an MBA. I want to make 6 figures... for no other reason but to make 6 figures and buy good beer instead of budweiser.

I didn't burn any bridges, but I don't think they were very happy.

Yeah, the smaller and more specialized your field is the more your connections to that small group of power in that industry matter.
