They also stalked them during war games, but the U.S. said they weren't running anti sub operations. That's either bull****, or they aren't doing a very good wargame. They should always be on the lookout for subs. I always felt this way when I was in. I always felt like our ships were defenseless out there. And we were. No one ever expects anyone to attack us. Ship security and defense systems were very lax.
It was a diesal-electric which can be very quiet (when using electric obviously). And from the comments on the first link, they said 5 miles is not torpedo range. I was not a weapons guy when I was in the navy, so I have no idea what the torpedo ranges were. But it was within missile range. Firing missiles would be a suicide attack, but they might be able to get some through.
